Peters & Lee
You are right Mike--it was Howard Greenfield who wrote a lot of really great songs with Neil Sedaka---Howard Greenfield died about 20 years ago, at the age of only 50. Neil also collaborated with Phil Cody, and they also wrote some unforgettable songs.
I knew Neil wrote"Stupid Cupid"--in one of his live shows I saw a few years ago, he sang through his "Songbook", starting with "Stupid Cupid" and "Where the Boys Are" etc, etc, etc. He has been amazingly prolific with his songwriting, and I just love most of his music.

On the subject again (Sort of)
Yes, we have strayed from "Peters & Lee". I was reviewing their songs from the LP when I copied over to CD and like their rendition of "Wonderful Baby". I don't know if any of you remember it at all.
Our children were teen-agers during the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. We had to put up with a lot of their music. Trust me, it seems mild now compared to what is out there now! At least "Hip-Hop" came later.
Isn't it interesting that some of the rock and roll singers (Rod Stewart, etc.) have come out with "Standard" albums. I just can't seem to quite get my ear around his voice singing balads. What is wrong with my ear? Help!

Hello all
Hope you all had a great Xmas.
Just noticed this thread and thought I'd offer my tuppence worth.
I'm not a fan of Neil Sedaka as such but he wrote a song with Howard Greenfield called "The Hungry Years", which I'm not sure is too well known in the UK (was it more of a hit in America, I wonder?), and which was covered by Johnny Mathis in one of my topmost favourite JM recordings. Of JM's hundreds of individual song covers, I would place it in my Top Three. Strangely, though, Neil Sedaka's own recording of it leaves me cold.
I have mixed views on the Beatles. Unlike Mike, I prefer their later stuff to their earlier recordings, but the thing that annoys me about many of their album tracks, particulrly those pre-Revolver (1966), is that they are too short and seem to fade out just as you're starting to get into the song. I wnder whether there was some issue to do with cost of the recordings or something. The White Album (1968) is better though as the tracks are longer. These are the only Beatles albums I own.

I think the latter Beatle tracks last longer as the band were into their "phychadelia" phase by then. But the earlier Beatles tracks were just "two minute" pop songs as a lot of the songs from the early 60's were.
"The Hungry Years" is well known in the UK, it was played a lot on the radio.

I need to go back to Oasis for a moment. Noel and Liam have every right to compare themselves to the Beatles. Oasis was huge in the 1990s. And more importantly, nothing the Beatles wrote or recorded can compare to these two Oasis masterpieces:
Wonderwall
Don't Look Back In Anger
Oasis released many other outstanding records (such as Stop Crying Your Heart Out and Champagne Supernova). Try to name one Beatles song as powerful as these any of these four songs.

Hi Paul--it is good to see you back with us. But you will never, never, ever get me to admit that Oasis can ever compare to The Beatles in any way whatsoever.
Just to name a few beautiful Beatle ballads---"Here there and Everywhere"---"I will"---"And I love Her"---loads more.
I have heard of "Wonderwall", but I could not sing it to save my life--and I have never heard of "Don't Look Back in Anger"--I think that says it all !!!!!
And how many Oasis songs are covered by other singers---The Beatles "Yesterday" has been covered so many times!!

The Mike Flowers Pops and Ryan Adams have released cover versions on Wonderwall and they have been major hits.
Many bar bands have covered Wonderwall through the years, just like many lounge singers have sung Yesterday. But it's impossible to improve on the perfection of Oasis' version of Wonderwall; everything about it is magnificent. Don't Look Back In Anger features Noel on lead vocals and is the closer for their concerts. It's just stunning.
I've never heard of I Will by the Beatles. There's only one version of Yesterday that I can listen to. And you all know this singer very well.
I find Yesterday to be a dirge, unless sung by Matt Monro. I like Here There And Everywhere and And I Love Here sung by the Beatles and especially by Matt Monro and Emmylou Harris (for HTAE). But the craftmanship of these songs just can't compare to the four Oasis songs I mentioned.

"Don't Look Back In Anger" is a very good song Paul, I agree, with a brilliant "guitar riff", but you just cannot compare Oasis to The Beatles. Its maybe just the "Yanks" who don't like The Beatles, as Grandpajan doesn't like them either

No, it's not a Yanks thing. My office-mate of 20+ years thinks the Beatles are the greatest thing to ever happen to music, and The White Album is his favourite album of all time.
I was into different music during the Beatles period. As I've mentioned previously I was listening to easy listening music, Motown, soul music, and pop music. I'm not even sure which is my favourite Beatles song; I like many of them but nothing stands out as exceptional. Perhaps "If I Fell" is my favourite. "I Should Have Known Better" and "Come Together" are two others I particularly like.
If you ask a sample of Brits whom they prefer, Oasis vs Beatles, I think you'll be surprised how many prefer Oasis.
