A review from USA

Post by Terence Lee » Wed Mar 19, 2008 1:35 pm

Forget solar panels, windmills and ethanol. If we want to find the greatest natural alternative power source on earth, we should simply harness the lungs of Shirley Bassey.

What a force of nature this women remains. Her lungs must be deeper than the Grand Canyon, her throat more muscular than Matthew McConaughey's chest.

Essentially, Bassey does to notes what Barry Bonds does to baseballs. But it isn't just a physical feat she's performing. Emotion rings through every sinewy phrase - even if it's all delivered at a fever pitch.

Dame Shirley hasn't recorded an album in 10 years. For this new one, she cut just two fresh tracks, including Pink's zippy "Get the Party Started," but they prove that, even at age 71, she's still got the chops. The rest simply lets remixers have their mad way with vintage Bassey barks, taken from songs that snake back as far as '60s touchstones like "You Only Live Twice" and "What Now My Love."

The Welsh-born star has always had edge, even at her most Vegas-y. The voraciousness of that voice - the man-eating hunger in it - has always given her a hold on cool. Like some female answer to her fellow Welshman Tom Jones, Bassey has a voice that could slay dragons. Who would want to screw with that?

Some of the remixers cast against type. There's almost a chill-out calm to the music of "I Will Survive," a nice contrast to Bassey's barreling vocal. In a take on Lionel Richie's "Hello," the music has a firmer, deeper backbeat, giving this mushy song spine.

Bassey has delicious fun with Grace Jones' "Slave to the Rhythm," luxuriating in a sexuality that falls just shy of camp, while the mix of "I Who Have Nothing" adds modest modern spices to this '60s touchstone of desperation.

But it's the new "Party" single where Bassey gets to prove her relevance entirely on her own terms. Over a slightly slower, more deliberate beat, she unfurls that feline growl and lets her bellow reverberate around the whole recording. It's belting at its most stirring.

Hi Marian

What is truly amazing is that this chart position is in the Hot Dance Club Play chart which means a lot of young people are dancing to her Pink song!

The rumour that DSB and Bono were doing the next Bond song was a hoax.

An April Fool's Joke!

Now it has been confirmed that Amy Winehouse will sing the the title song for the next Bond adventure. Uugh!
