Jack Jones
Re: Jack Jones
Hi Marian--thanks for that, although they are not available to listen to yet,, they do not usually do that before it is released for sale.
A nice collection of songs there-some are familiar-but I do not recognise them all-I am sure I have never heard JJ singing "Not while I'm around" for a start--but I could be mistaken.

Marian, if you click on Marians link you can actually listen to them all, her links takes you directly to Amazon.com rather than u.k.

Re: Jack Jones
Don't tell me it's only for download? I hate that!
The clips I listened to were good and I like the sleeve.
Baby Don't You Quit Now was on an album years ago, but this wil be a new recording.
Marian please keep us informed when we can actually buy a 'CD'!

I got there---yes it said "not available" but that was just to buy, so I was able to listen-I just listen to "Not while I'm around" and I am pretty sure I have never heard JJ sing that song. i will listen to some more later-when I have more time !

Re: Jack Jones
Thanks Marian. That's a great cover pic of Jack. I would like to purchase the CD, not the downloads.
I wonder if it's only Mike Renzi accompanying Jack on the piano for all the songs. Must listen to the samples soon.

Re: Jack Jones
I'm sorry to say I'm not all that keen on some of the songs, but hopefully it will grow on me!

Re: Jack Jones
I like most of them Marian but what I don't like is minimal backing, I always get the feeling when they record with the bare minimum they can't afford a band!!!, his Bergman album is the same. I just love a great band or orchestra playing behind the singer.
Do you know if this was recorded recently ? If so his voice sounds good and i see the wedding ring is heavily featured!

Re: Jack Jones
I think it is very recent Karl. I prefer a big orchestral backing too, but we haven't had that for Jack in a long time. Too much alimony to pay! He sometimes has his trio, and then other band members from here when he tours.
His present wife Eleonora, was a friend of his last wife, and she actually introduced her to Jack!

Re: Jack Jones
The songs are all slow ballads and I only hear piano accompaniment.
Re: Jack Jones
Marian every time I saw JJ onstage he had a big orchestra and Joe Kloess conducting most of the time.
I never booked to see Tony Bennett for the same reason years ago, paying a high price for a trio backing him, you don't mind if it'san orchestra or band as they all have to be paid but when they do things on the cheap the ticket prices should also be cheaper in my opinion!

I thought I heard bass on one of the songs. But it could have come from the piano.Terence Lee wrote:The songs are all slow ballads and I only hear piano accompaniment.
Why do these singers think we only want to hear slow ballads? I "listened again" to Ken Bruce last week to hear a Detroit Emeralds song. Some song by Barbra Streisand "Solitary something" came right before it. I was so bored with the Streisand song, I missed the Detroit Emeralds song.
My other gripe is the overuse of complex jazz chords. Why can't he sing Lollipops and Roses (which I love) with the original chords? I feel these jazz chords take away from the song; sometimes the song almost become unrecognizable.

Re: Jack Jones
Hi Paul
Streisand's song is Solitary Moon and I had just dozed off to it while listening to her latest CD on headphones. I gather you are not her fan, right Paul? Some songs are beautiful but when she scales the high notes, her voice is raspy which Mariana & I did not find attractive.
The complex jazz chords are supposed to make a song sound sophisticated but it doesn't always work. Like you said, sometimes the song becomes unrecognizable. Singers who oversing are also boring. Nancy Wilson went through a period when she howled and shrieked her way through some "classy" songs but in her last 2 CDs, she went back to her roots and won 2 Grammys.
Paul, do you like Dianne Reeves?

Paul I agree with you, my sentiments entirely!
