Hi Marian

The so-called "Red and White" album (1967) is out on 3 December, but I'm sure you know this.

One thing I didn't know until a few days ago was that JM recorded an album in 1981 which has never been released (apparently because the record company thought it wouldn't sell as it didn't fit Johnny's image). It was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic, who also produced Sister Sledge and similar groups. Some of the tracks are available to listen to on youtube.

Sorry Karl-yes, I had read it was rereleased--just was not thinking.

I have never heard of the "red and white album " but I know there is quite a lot of stuff that has never been released.

It's Ok--I know now--it is "Johnny Mathis sings"---it has a very red cover--not much white--I have never heard it called that before--yes, I did know about it.

I have an American LP which is also red & white if I remember and the title is Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me. It was released here with a different sleeve and title and possibly an alternate track list if I also remember correctly.

I believe it was released under another name here--which at the moment, I cannot remember.

I have remembered--it was released in Uk as "Sweet Surrender"--completely different cover, but the same tracks.

Yes, Marian, the "red and white" album is the one you describe; it's just that I'd heard it was known by that name by Mathis fans (except maybe yourself) and was released in 1967. "Sweet Surrender" (or "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me") is a 1977 JM album. I also recently learned that the rare album "Away From Home" was a UK release of the 1965 US album "The Sweetheart Tree" and contained three tracks that did not appear on the US version "If I Had You", "Try A Litle Tenderness", and" If Love Were All" and which have in fact never been released in the US (strange, as JM is an American artist).

None of my Mathis friends recognised the name of "The red and white album"

"Away from Home" is a very rare album, and yes, those bonus tracks are brilliant, and as far as I know have not appeared anywhere else.

This Lp was actually on Ebay this week--may even still be there--first time I have ever seen it on there--at a good price, considering its rarity.

I am not surprised you have not seen it Karl--apart from being really old, it is so rare.

There are lots of great clips of JM on youtube performing live on TV shows; more keep being added all the time. Just been watching a newly uploaded one of him singing "Over The Weekend" on a 1972 Mike Douglas show: awesome vocals. I wish they could release these recordings on a DVD or even on an audio CD, as many of them are as good, and sometimes even better, than his studio recordings of the same songs. But we can't have everything, I guess.
