ROYAL VARIETY SHOW

Did anyone watch last night's show?

Close to the end there was a nice tribute paid to entertainers who have passed away and are still missed, pictures were flashed up as a violinist (who's name escapes me but I have heard of her) played. I remember seeing Larry Hagman, Dusty,Eric Sykes etc but I was surprised Kathy Kirby wasn't included, the pics went up so fast I can't even recall seeing Matt but I hope he was there?

Robbie Williams is a good entertainer I enjoyed his spot, I feel Neil Diamond is becoming a showman when he never used to be and Rod Stewart - Dear Rod please stick to singing Rock ballads, I was expecting Placido Domingo to come out and sing Maggie May!!!

I did think the show was rather good though.

Yes, we watched it Karl. I thought David Walliams did a good job. Wasn't very impressed by the show considering the cast list, I always find the Royal Variety Show disappointing, I feel too many people are being crammed in and mostly seem to only get to perform one number. I think the finalists of BGT would put on a better variety show, rather than too many "stars." Too many singers too. Considering it was the 100th Show in the Queen's Diamond Anniversary year, I thought it mediocre. I don't think Matt was in the tribute either. :( :(

Having been at a recording of a Royal show in Edinburgh, the stars performances are edited for transmission which does make it look like they were not given much time..

I am sure Rod Stewart would have been given more time when virtually unknnown arits liek The Chinese Tenors performed two songs.

As Royal Variety shows go I felt this was one of the better one's as some are rather dire.

I do think Placido Domingo dsererved a solo, the man is a legend.

Marian I just realised perhaps Matt and Kathy were never on a Royal Variety show maybe that's
why they were not shown? If the were then they certainly deserved to be in the tribute.

I remember the year Dusty was on and each act introduced the next. The Dave Clark 5 introduced Dusty and then she introduced Johnny Hallyday using her best French accent for Monsieur Johnny Hallyday!

Matt was definitely was Karl. I had a programme and a ticket that I gave to Michele, so I'm afraid I've forgotten the actual year.
He was on with Morecambe as Wise, as there was a photo on a Sunday supplement last weekend with them being presented to the Queen Mother, with Matt further down the line.

Yes. 1966 - which of course is one of very few that don't survive in the archives! - Some excerpts do , but no Matt!

I taped it so that I could skip the boring bits--but I watched half of it tonight, and I am actually really enjoying it-I have seen some that have been awful, but not this one.

I think the Queen should award herself a medal for sitting through most of that dire Three hours, but when Prince Philip was asked what he thought was the best act this year, he replied..All of them, but to be honest we're both stone deaf.
Thankfully we decided to tape the Variety show and watch the usual quizzes, University Challenge, and Connect, and are we glad that we did.
Apart from Placido Domingo, Diversity and Spellbound and the nostalgia of those who have passed away, we gladly skipped through the acts. In fact we were beginning to think that the audience had all passes away too until Neil Diamond livened them all up with Sweet Caroline. What a trooper.

Actually L&H I thought the audience were very lively and laughed a lot. I sometimes do what you do record it and skip through but I watched it all the way through this year.

I think that being in the Royal Albert Hall gave it a different stmosphere.

It is such a special place.
