Robbie Williams's new swing album

Post by paul jh » Tue Nov 19, 2013 8:14 pm

Has anyone purchased Robbie Williams's new album Swings Both Ways? His previous swing album didn't appeal to me, but this one has new songs written with Guy Chambers. But I don't like the guest artists (all has-beens) and I don't like Cab Calloway style swing. So I don't know if I'"l buy it.

I'd appreciate reading any reviews from Matt Monro fans.

Perhaps Lena and Harry and Sandra and John can help. I love the swing style of Matt Monro's Around the World and As Long as I'm Singing, but I hate Minnie the Moocher and anything like that. What are the two styles of swing called?

Paul I would hardly call Michael Buble a has been. What does that make you then?

Swings Both Ways is one of the tracks on the album.

I like Robbie singing his own material best but I'm not a huge fan - however the last time I saw him (think it was the Queen's jubilee concert) I thought he was really good and more mature.

From the songs you've mentioned, it sounds like Robbie is doing a 'Sings Bobby Darin' album, Paul. :D

I didn't know Robbie Williams went into "swing" mode Paul. I do know that Matt Goss from "Bros" is trying to reinvent himself in that mode and his two swing albums seem favourable. I haven't heard them to be honest but from what I've been reading they are more "legit" than Robbie Williams.

That is one of the most ingenuously offensive remarks I have had the displeasure to read on this forum.Clearly not in any sense made in jest I
would suggest you apologize and remove it for the sake of common decency.

I do fear for all your professed experience you are a rather opinionated not to say ignorant man.

It was just my opinion to use the word has-beens. Most people on this forum know my feelings for Michael Buble's music. I simply don't understand why anyone would listen to him when there are so many excellent singers most notably Matt Monro. But I don't like Lily Allen, Kelly Clarkson, or Olly Murs either. I was hoping that Robbie would sing with some of the great new singers out today like Sam Smith, John Newman, Jessie Ware -- all of whom could sing and swing any song. But the record company thought that Buble, Lily, Kelly, and Oily had higher name recognition. I choose artistry any day.

I know that many of the forum members loved his first swing album Swing When You're Winning, so I wondered if they were buying the new one.

Marian: Robbie has not recorded As Long as I'm Singing and Around the World. I guess Bobby Darrin recorded them, but I only want to hear Matt Monro sing them. For me, no one can swing a song like Matt Monro. This was recently reinforced with the superb recordings of My Kind of Girl and In the Arms of Love on Alternate Monro.

Don I wondered when you would re-appear.

My remark was no more offensive than Paul's, infact as I recall your comments to me in the past have been the same but I chose to ignore you.

I am not Michael Buble's biggest fan but he has recorded some good songs, however on some of his recordings I feel there is something lackng - however he is not a has-been.

In closing Michael is not a Sinatra, Darin, or Monro, and neither is Robbie Williams!

I 're-appear' as and when my 24 hour Carer commitment allows.
You have been previously appraised of same, you self-aggrandizing,obnoxious individual.

Smarmy remarks are unbecoming,in any context you seek to couch them.

I havnt bought it yet but waiting for Christmas present ....Robbie has actually really grown on me. I love his version of Somewhere Under The Sea ...and Mr Bojangles ...i think for a lad from Stoke he has got something that reaches out to people that I didn't see in his early days ....when i receive it i would love to give a review ...the only song i like of Kelly Clarkson is Because Of You ..she actually wrote it to. I remember hearing it in ikea store a while back and stopped in my tracks as it really moved me. One mans food is another's poison as they say and that's what makes it all interesting imho ....not directing this comment at anybody personally btw....I'm a bit backward when it comes to some ratites ...when people "get it" ...i just don't but when all the excitement calms down i usually discover them then ..which is odd lol ....
Softly, I will leave you softly
For my heart would break if you should wake and see me go.....

Please Don, we don't want any name calling.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and to call another member a "self-aggrandizing,obnoxious individual" is really not called for.

Karl has as much right to his opinion as you, I admit the 'What does that make you' was not a good thing to say, but I suspect it's not quite what he meant. I do find that sometmes somethings you say don't work very well when written down. :|

Everybody calm down now!

I'm on the fence over Mr Buble. I actually think he can sing well, but his producer's insist on using masses of autotune on his records to the point that he sounds like a robot. Some of his early recordings don't feature auto tune show that he doesn't actually need it.

Robbie's stuff I quite like, but I'd take the originals over his re-recordings any day.
