Johnny cash fans?
Anybody like Johnny Cash ? In the last couple of years I've grown to love his music

Softly, I will leave you softly

Some of his songs are ok but he was never a great singer, however I did read his book last year and enjoyed it. There was a lovely picture of him with his little grandson walking beside him and Johnny look very proud.
Re: Johnny cash fans?
I disagree Karl. He was a great singer. Listen to I Still Miss Someone.
I loved many of his hits: Ring of Fire, I Walk the Line, Riders in the Sky, Folson Prison Blues, and the big duets with June Carter: Jackson and It Ain't Me Babe.

Well Paul it doesn't surprise me that you disagree but he was no Matt Monro! However that is my opinion and you have yours!
Some of work he was off-key and his version of Jackson with June Carter is simply dreadful compared to Nancy & Lee's version.
However Johnny did record a good version of Tom Petty's Won't Back Down however I would never rate him as one of the world's great singers.

Oh Johnny was so passionate about his music and his faith and he cared about people ....one of his last songs Hurt always moves me ....we saw a tribute act that told his story too ....he had a colourful life for sure but to me he seemed so genuine and he wore black to remember the oppressed and less fortunate ....of course his style totally different to Matt .....he lost his little brother to an accident in his fathers saw mill i think it was and it affected him deeply but not many people realise he was a devout believer right to the end ...i love listening and watching him sing and talk. I've learned loads from him

Not many singers come across with such passion Paul he was a one off too ...paul jh wrote:I disagree Karl. He was a great singer. Listen to I Still Miss Someone.

Re: Johnny cash fans?
I was always sceptical about Johnny Cash till I heard that song he did when says "it ain't me you're looking for...babe", with the delay before 'babe', and it clicked with me. Not great vocals technically-speaking but quite expressive. Haven't listened to much more of his stuff but might get round to it. I always think of him in the same vein as other, what I call 'low brow', performers like Chuck Berry. Prefer Roy Orbison though.

Yes he is expressive Jon ...i love the conviction he put into his music ....he sang about life in the raw many times but also sang songs of great hope too.....just before he died he sang Hurt sung by a younger band Nine Inch Nails ...my son seeing them next year ....the lyrics are stark but he sings it in a very moving way and the video is moving too.....it was how he felt when June died ...as far as I know....there was so much depth to Johnny i think sometimes some artistes are not obvious ....they can be growers ...he has been for me anyway

I think this might be viewed as a bit depressing but I am so drawn to it .....the conviction in his voice and his demeanour ..comes across as a very honest performance if you want a look its here ...not every bodies cuppa tea i know but ...very moving inmho

I agree Jon about that delay before he sings "Babe". That makes the song even more special. I don't recall this song from the 60s, so it's fairly new to me.
I never put him in the same category as Roy Orbison and Chuck Berry. They were rockabilly. Cash is country. I prefer country and Johnny Cash.
