A Dozen for the Desert Island

This is Marian's idea from the "What are you listening to" area. It sounds like fun, so it deserves its proper thread.

:?: What are the 12 songs that you would take to a desert island? You can list 12 single records (not albums) and provide the artist, or simply list your 12 favourite songs.

I'm going to need some time to think about this, before I list my 12.

By 12 different artists Paul?

Artists can be repeated, but let's try to not have every song by the same artist. If possible don't list the same song twice, e.g.,

Spanish Eyes - Al Martino
Spanish Eyes - Matt Monro

but the following would be okay:

Spanish Eyes - Al Martino
To The Door Of The Sun - Al Martino
...but limit it to 1 - 6 per artist, please.

Will give this some thought and draw up a list - eventually. Can it include classical as well as popular music?

I'm sure it can Jon.

Ooh--this will take some thinking about--I can think of a few immediately -
then it goes into dozens--if not hundreds.

I will have a good think about this.

This is more difficult than I thought, there are just so many songs I love, I have got about 6 at the moment.

I am the same-I have 8 definates at the moment--but a huge number to choose the final 4 from.

Yes, Jon, it can include any genre. But narrow each selection to an individual piece (e.g., Pathetique Sonata).

This is a tough task. I am thinking of songs that I will want to hear over and over again, and not necessarily my favourite songs of all time.

I think that once we have listed our 12 choices, we should then name ONE of these as the sole choice for the desert island if we could only take that and that alone. Tough, maybe, but let's force ourselves.

I agree with Paul that the choices do not all have to be our all-time favourites - some music can have value for all sorts of reasons (nostalgia, variety etc.), not necessarily because it's preferred above all others. In fact, I often tell people that I never listen to my favourite music in case I go off it ! (well, a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my drift).

Well here goes, as I kind of initiated this posting I thought I should take the plunge..

My choices all mean something to me from my past (and present) but I've tried to team them up with how my different emotions might surface if I really was alone on a desert island.

scared - I'll Walk with God, Mario Lanza.
lonely - On Days Like These, Matt Monro
angry - Take Five, Dave Brubeck
sad - Here Comes Summer, Jerry Keller
resigned - Beyond the Sea, Bobby Darin
nostalgic - From a Distance/Imagine, Jack Jones
lively - Happy, The Carpenters
happy - The Theme from A Summer Place, Percy Faith
hopeful - The Impossible Dream, Jack Jones
weary - It's a Grand Night For Singing, from State Fair
romantic - If There Ever is a Next Time - Matt Monro
euphoric - Strike Up the Band, Nelson Riddle
(there's a rescue ship on the horizon!)

If I could only take one, it would be From a Distance/Imagine by Jack Jones. He combined these two songs perfectly so I could get two for the price of one!
