Celebrating the Carpenters

Did anyone see this programme on ITV1 on Wednesday night? Pretty dire, I thought. A series of pop artists doing their versions of well-known Carpenters songs. Only Dionne Warwick redeemed it at the end. Jamie Callum did a duet with Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud, announcing her as a "great singer"! Uh, I don't think so: she just about sang her song in tune, and that was it: totally forgettable. Chrissie Hynde also murdered "Superstar". There were some interesting contributions from Richard Carpenter on film, which kind of made up for the rest. All in all, the artistes' voices just seemed so inadequate compared to Karen's.

I have sky+ it, but not watched it yet-although I already tend to agree with Jon-if they wanted to do a Tribute show, why not let us see film of Karen herself.

The'trailer'said it all! Anything with Amanda Holden should be avoided.

I recorded it but didn't bother to watch having seen a few snippets of the show.
The only people who can do justice to the Carpenters music are the Carpenters themselves.

Usually I agree with you Marian.
However I enjoyed the Jamie Cullum/Kimberly Walsh duet. I liked how it wasn't the Carpenters arrangement. I love the way he changes up some of the vowels when he sings ... very unique. Can't wait to see him in concert again.

Why bother with these tribute shows..............NO ONE can better the original songs!!........... which have to be sung by The Capenters

I think most of us, and the public [from reading the teletext pages]
would agree with that Robert.

The appeal of Jamie Cullum escapes me. He may be a good piano player but his voice does nothing for me. Sorry.
