Other Singers

Matt will always be my favourite singer, as Mickie and Michele will know, but over the last couple of years I have become a fan of Al Martino, went to see him last year, here in Blackpool and he was brilliant, also going to see him agin in October, in Southport. Also a big fan of Perry Como, Andy Williams and Roger Whittaker, they have all recorded some lovely songs, Matt's still No.1 though.

John, Couldn't agree more, Al Martino was brilliant last year, but then he always has been, we've made our bookings including Southport.
Tony Bennett, another great legend. They don't come much bigger and better than him. His Birthday tomorrow the 3rd August. He will be 79, Fantastic.
Matt , in our opinion never sounded like any other singer, simply A master of his craft.

Another, not too well known singer who recorded briefly for CAPITOL, was VIC FRANKLIN. I have a few songs I recorded off the air and if anyone wants to help me find out what happened to him, let me know and I will send you the mp3 version.

I am only 20 years old but I do love the artists that my parents admired.
As well as Matt Monro I do like Tony Christie, Neil Sedaka, Eva Cassidy and Karen Carpenter.

Most of today's artists just don't have the talent or the stage presence that the artists mentioned above have.

It's good to know that through this lovely website we can exchange views and thoughts etc.

All I can add to that is this, LONG LIVE GOOD QUALITY MUSIC.

Best Wishes,

Hilary :D

Yes, heres to Good Quality Music Hilary, and it's so good to know that you are enjoying and appreciating the best singers ever and while we've had such talented music lyricists and composers like Don Black, George and Ira Gershwyn. Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, to name a few, it will never die. In fact it's now kicking in with a return and even younger vocalists have realised this. The TV Commercials are also using these unforgettable songs and singers.
We do think that there is talent around today but you are right Hilary they lack stage presence and charisma, and without it they've got nothing.

Hello Lena and Harry,

I agree with you, there are a handful of very good young artists around that will hopefully still be here in years to come.

I think that Katie Melua, Norah Jones and Michael Buble are very good.
We saw Michael in concert here in Oxford about a year ago now.
His show is very good. He brings a cabaret style show to the Theatre and what's more it works!!

I don't think that there are many artists today who would go amongst the audience and shake hands with them and thank them for coming to see him!! He also tells jokes and stories too!!

Having watched the Matt Monro DVD which the family released last year.
I know that this is what Matt did during his career.
This brings the artist and the audience together and this is surely what it should be like.

Sadly, there is still this "them and us" situation which means that the performer can't or doesn't want to get too close to anyone.
How these artists could learn from Matt and Neil Sedaka.
After all, we won't bite them will we?!!

Best Wishes to all,

Hilary :)

We recently watched Tony Bennett recording songs for his 80th Tribute album at Abbet Road Studios in London. He recorded HOW DO YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING?with George Michael.
Some of his duet partners from today's pop world were said to be in awe of Tony as he could still hold all the notes and they feared they couldn't!
the album is due in September-some of the duet partners includeBarbra Streisand(Smile),,Bono(I Wanna Be Around),Sting,Billy Joel(The Good Life),K.d.lang(Because Of You),John Legend,Juanes,Sir Elton John(Rags To Riches),Michael Buble(Just In Time),Diana Krall,Elvis Costello, The Dixie Chicks,Stevie Wonder,Sir Paul McCartney(The Very Thought Of You) and more.
Clint Eastwood is currently producing a TV bio/docum.on Tony's life narrated by George Clooney.

What I think is so nice, is that we still here the music of Matt Monro on the radio. I have heard three songs this weekend.
Two on National radio and one on our local station here in Oxford.

Also, it is good that fans still request Matt's music, even thou they probably have the songs at home.
This is the mark of a much loved artist who is still loved and remembered by his fans.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were cabaret clubs in this country just like there were back in the seventies.

My parents met at a club in Sheffield. They went along to see Tony Christie who was appearing in cabaret that night. (Mr Christie you have a lot to answer for! )
The clubs were a great place to meet friends etc and you got to have a nice meal as well as enjoy some great muic too.

It is nice to see your favourite artist appearing at a theatre of course but the social thing isn't really there is it?
It would be lovely to have a few of these clubs around as there is certainly a great interest not just for my parents generation but also for mine as well.

My friends and I would like to see this sort of entertainment brought back as we are not all into night clubs etc as not all young people like this kind of music.

There is a new BBC 2 TV show starting in May.
It is called "The story of light entertainment" and is presented by Aled Jones. In the show which should be going out on a Saturday night, people from the world of entertainment discuss the lack of good variety shows on TV these days.

Tony Christie, Sir Cliff Richard and Irish Singer, Daniel O'Donnell are taking part in the show as well as others.
It should be worth a look and who knows, maybe the TV producers will take note and bring back a good variety show in the near future.

Best Wishes,

Hilary :D

There are some great singers mentioned in this topic, all top quality singers in their own right. Although I do like a few others, I find it difficult to find anyone to better our Mr Monro in my personal listening preferences.
The singers I would choose in any list however would be:
Matt Monro (obviously! :D )
Gene Pitney Andy Williams
Neil Diamond
Elton John
Engelbert Humperdink
Mario Lanza
David Whitfield
Freddie Mercury
Michael Buble

Karen Carpenter
Mariah Carey
Shirley Bassey
Shania Twain
Barbra Streisand

Hilary: I know what you're saying about Michael Buble I think he is good. I also see what you're saying about the 'them and us' part of your posting. It sometimes goes like that. I found Whitney Houston VERY much that way when I saw her. By contrast I'm going to see Gene Pitney next Wednesday and he is VERY into being with the fans. He gives a lot of time to chat to the fans both at concerts and on the forum on his website. Great guy. I like to see stars recognise the importance of their fans. David Whitfield was very much this way too so some do care about us u know. I agree about the caberet clubs - much more intimate than even the theatre. A lot of the big stars built their early careers through the caberet club circuit.
It's nice to see you have such a knowledge of your music Hilary.

Best wishes to all,

Lee H 8)
