RIP Gene Pitney

Post by Edgar » Wed Apr 05, 2006 4:27 pm

My deepest sympathy to Gene's family after his sudden death last night after what was said to have been a magnificent concert at St David's Hall in my home city of Cardiff. I never actually went to see him in concert, but I know he was a superb singer, and it's always very sad for somone to die at such a young age.

Yes Edgar, we too were very sorry to hear the sad news of Gene Pitney.
We hadn't actually seen him in concert but enjoyed his many recordings.
We have been told that to begin his performance to show his appreciation, he would read out and name all those fans who had written to him to wish him good luck with his tour. :) How many do that ?

It's very sad and I was just so stunned yesterday when I had a phone call from a friend to tell me the news. So untimely too as the tour had been going very very well for him and from his posts on his website and things he said during the concerts he was enjoying it all very much. I went to see him in concert last Wednesday (29/3) and he was superb! :D. A,wonderful eveing and his voice was certainly in outstanding form!! :D A unique singer of such great quality.
Lena & Harry: Gene did indeed read out cards that were sent to him. This was in the middle section of the show and he also brought out any presents that he'd received too so the sender and the audience in general could see them. He gave so much time over to meeting his fans at each concert but also had the habit of signing the cd's which were sold before each show to give the fans who didn't get to meet him personally the chance to still have his autograph. You're so right, not many artisits would do this at all.
Very sad for all his fans, I'm sure he'll be very much missed.

Lee :(

One of my favourite Gene Pitney tracks is the wonderful ballad I'm Gonna be Strong, the note changes at the end of the song are incredible, nearly in the Matt class. It is so hard to believe he is no longer with us as only a couple of days before he died he was doing an interview on the local BBC television programme and he looked in absolutely terrific health. It was such a shock for everyone.

My tears will fall now that your gone :(

Very sorry to hear about Gene Pitney.
It was nice to hear both national and local radio pay tribute to him.
Most have played "three of the best" from Gene and then the presenter would tell the listeners a little about his life and career.

It's very sad that the music world has lost another legend.
If there is such a place called heaven, then it must be filled with great people and the music will still be playing for those who are already there.
