Judith Durham & The Seekers

Post by michduncg » Tue Oct 03, 2006 12:16 am

Another one from my parents record collection was the Seekers 'Live at The Talk of the Town', it was actually a recording of their farewell concert. I loved the close harmonies of their songs which reflected the 'folk' interest if the mid-late 60s. The simple sounding accoustic guitar arrangements are very soothing, and the clarity of Judith Durhams voice is amazing. The sang some hauntingly beauiful songs like 'The Carnival is over', 'Colours of my life' and 'Morningtown Ride', as well as the more upbeat 'Georgy Girl' and 'World of our own' before breaking up in 1968. They did a reunion tour in 2003, including the Royal Festival Hall and have recently been awarded the Keys of the City of Melbourne from whence they come. A lot of their tracks are on I-Tunes, but I like the Talk of the Town album because of the backing of the band their, which adds another dimension to some of their tracks. Of course the Talk of the Town has long since closed and is now more famous as 'Stringfellows' night club

Mike, I believe Matt and Tony Bennett hold the joint record for appearances at the Talk of the Town.

Theres not much history on the internet I can find out about it, except on Wikipedia. I didn't realise that it didn't have a drinks licence any more, and is now only used for corporate hospitality

yes, i like the seekers as well. went to see them in 1995 when they did a reunion tour at sheffield, and also went to see judith on her own about 3 years ago when she was celebrating her 60th birthday, there is also a dvd out of that concert. they also recorded an album in 1997 called FUTURE ROAD, which is superb

Golly - was it that long ago that they had the reunion - I remember seeing Judith Durham on Wogan - so it must have been a while back. She has such a pure voice. I also seem to remember a beautiful song called 'Angeline is always Friday' - not heard it for years so it may not be as good as I remember!
