ANDY WILLIAMS

Post by john » Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:29 pm

I have always liked Andy Williams. I started listening to him before Matt, and it was through a song called SOLITAIRE i started listening to him, because at the time i was a huge fan of THE CARPENTERS, and they recorded a version of this song, and i happened to be browsing through a record shop in stockport and came accross ANDY WILLIAMS,s SOLITAIRE album and thought i would try it and immediately liked him, my favourite songs are CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE, HOME LOVIN' MAN, HAPPY HEART AND MAY EACH DAY. Went to see him in Manchester about 4 years ago and he was brilliant, he sang practically u.k. hit he had over the years.

Andy Williams did have a lot of UK hits. I think more than in the US. He was basically known for his family Christmas TV specials in the US.

We wrote about his Dear Heart in the Jack Jones series of messages.

My favourite Andy Williams' songs are: Can't Get Used To Losing You and Happy Heart. And I've just discovered two beautiful recordings by him: Tom Jobim's Corcovado (with a lovely falsetto at the end) and Henry Mancini's beautiful In The Arms Of Love from a movie I've never heard of (something like What Did You Do In The War). I actually thought this was a Bert Kaempfert song, because the arrangement was so "Kaempfert". As I've mentioned previously, I love the Kaempfert arrangements of the 1960s. He has the best version of his own Strangers In The Night.

I grew up only knowing Andy Williams' versions of Charade and Moon River, but now I prefer Henry Mancini's version of both songs and Matt Monro's Charade and Danny Williams' Moon River.

Paul, in the DVD "An Evening with Matt Monro" which is Matts concert from Melbourne Australia in 1967, Matt mentions before he sings it, that "In The Arms of Love" is his version of the Andy Williams song
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Hi John, Paul and Robert,

Andy Williams is a great singer isn't he?
I read a little about him in a magazine recently.
Andy is 77 years old and still performing every week!

If I read the article correctly, he owns a theatre in Branson, [or was it the Osmonds that own the theatre but Andy performers there so much he should own the theatre!]

Like many other singers, he is still in good voice and let's hope Andy will still be performing for many more years to come.

Just received the new Andy Williams cd this morning and I am really pleased with it. Andy's voice is still good at the age of 78, he does a great version of Robbie William's SHE'S THE ONE

Hope you manage to get it o.k. Marian. I don't know whi it is not available in the shops, they said maybe next year. I think a similar thing happened to the last studio album he released, a country one.

I used to really like Andy Williams and have many of his albums, and loved his tv shows, but we saw him live about three years ago in Basingstoke (which Andy pronounced Bassingstoke!) and I don't like to say it, but we were quite disappointed. Obviously making allowances for his age now and though he can still sing well, the old magic just didn't seem to be there anymore.
Sorry!

Marian

I had tea with Andy about three years ago at a club in Charing Cross Road-he was charming and we had a great meeting/chat etc. I thought he had lost far too much weight and he said he was on a'DAIRY PRODUCT FREE'diet. Since then,he has reverted to 'proper diet'which may have helped his voice/vocal power.
At same time saw him at The Bridgewater Hall,Manchester and he put on a super show-of course, not like he did in his earlier years.Lots of modern songs including an excellent version of DESPERADO now on his latest album(I think).
More recently he was on BBC TV ONE in a show introduced by Natasha Kaplinsky-I must admit,I watched the show more to see her than the cast.
Andy didn't sound too good on that!
