Bread

Post by paul jh » Sat Nov 11, 2006 11:51 pm

I'm very surprised with the recent UK album chart performance of the reissued The Sound of Bread (peaking at #18 a few weeks ago). Was Bread popular in the UK? They were a bit too "lite" for my tastes in the 1970s. My favourite song was Make It With You, which was the number 1 song when I got my tonsils out (I listened to the countdown in my hospital room). I also like Sweet Surrender and Everything I Own. Even though I didn't like it at the time, I now recognise that If is an excellent song (and now a standard).

Couldn't pass on this one Paul.

Jack Jones made an album of Bread hits called "Breadwinners".

I never knew that Marian. I'm sure Jack Jones's melodic voice would be perfect for David Gates' songs. Thanks for letting us know about this Jack Jones' album.

"Breadwinners" by Jack Jones was also one of my favourite albums. But "The Sound of Bread" has been reissued so many times-personally, I love it--plus David Gates has made a few solo albums---"Goodbye Girl" and "Love is always 17"--maybe one or 2 others.

And the song "If" must surely be covered by every singer you can think of. Great song !

I like Bread too, especially toasted   seriously I have always liked David Gates and Bread from the very beginning in the early 70's, so sweet and melodic tunes, brilliant 8)

Johnny Mathis recorded "If" in 1971 and the final note is one of the longest he ever sang - goes on for ever. Not a standout song in itself for me though.

Not as long as Jack Jones can hold the last note though Jon.... It's definately Jack's song, and the first one that brought him to England to sing in 1972.... and he's still coming back, and singing better than ever!

Even Frank Sinatra recorded the song-the album is:-
SOME NICE THINGS I'VE MISSED.
He did it once or twice in concert too.A lovely song, hard to sing badly!
