From the New York auditions I liked the two girlfriends from New Jersey---especially the second (untrained) singer. I also liked the lady who sang Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You, but she was rejected. She's another who made it to Hollywood in previous years.

I want the auditions to be over and for the Hollywood phase to begin!
Frank Sinatra's version is pretty good AND Tony Bennett sings it well too.
In concert,Tony sings the lovely song,without a mike almost a capella-stunning!

Yes Tony's "Fly Me To The Moon" without music was unforgettable Mark.
Would be nice if he repeated it this time.

If Tony Bennett's version is quiet and simple, I may like it (especially if he includes the opening lyric). But if it's OTT, I won't like it. I've only heard Frank Sinatra sing it as a swing version and I don't like the song done in a swing version. (I do love the excellent up tempo instrumental version by Joe Harnell ... I forgot that yesterday.)

I agree with you Terence concerning the melody. The popular (mainstream) music of the US is urban/black/hip hop and has been that way for over 10 years. Many of these young persons have only heard this music, so that's the style they sing. So they can't stick to the melody and constantly embellish it. I prefer singers stick to the melody. In my opinion the person who altered the melody more effectively than anyone I've ever heard is Matt Monro. As you know, he slightly alters the melody of many songs (Fly Me To The Moon is a good example). But his alterations always work. I don't know how he did it; it was always perfect. I loved how he changed the melody for the first word of For All We Know. I don't know if these were his ideas or his arranger suggested them. It's pure genius.

H&L-Tony WILL sing-no,perform (IN OTHER WORDS)FLY ME TO THE MOON towards the closing of his show-even at 80,he turns off the microphones and sings a capella with only minimal guitar accompaniment.
the recorded version is on SONGS FOR THE JET SET&THE FIRST FORTY YEARS 4CD set.

Did you get to see the top 24 on American Idol over the week-end?

My favourite woman is Melinda Doolittle, the background singer from Tennessee. She sang Since You Been Gone by Aretha Franklin. She was absolutely amazing in both her singing and stage presence. I get chills just thinking about it. I also liked Lakisha (who sang AIATYING better than Jennifer Hudson) and Amy (who's already gone, but she had a lovely voice). My favourite man is Brandon Rogers, the other background singer. He has a unique timbre to his voice. And he's always smiling, and his heroes are his mother and father. So you gotta love him!

Hi Jeff--yes I caught up with American Idol-all 5 hours of it!!!.

At the moment, there are none really that stand out for me, but I agrre with those that you named as being the best of the bunch. I guess it takes them a couple of weeks to settle down, and for us to get to know them more.

Please be sure to watch American Idol this week-end. Nick Pedro does a sensational version of Fever. I'm so tired of hearing this song on these types of programmes, but Nick's is the best I've heard. Two singers attempt Feeling Good. Now this is a song that only Jack Jones and Muse should sing. But does Ryan Secrest mention Jack Jones? No, he mentions that incredibly mean person (and not good singer at that) Nina Simone. AJ Tabaldo does a fine version, but I didn't care for Leslie Hunt's version. My favourite Melinda Doolittle is so impressive with My Funny Valentine. Please watch and send your comments. Thanks!

I am always out on a Friday night, but I shall watch as much as I can when I get back before I go to bed, and finish it while I am having my breakfast tomorrow morning.

I must say that Nick Pedro was one of my early favourites, although he did not seem to do so well last week.

Well, I have just watched all of American Idol--results too.

I was totally amazed to see Nick go first--he was a singer I would have loved to have heard more of--my kind of singer. Plus surprised that AJ went and Sanjaya?? stayed.

I was not surprised at the 2 women who went. A few good women singers, but Melinda is in a class of her own--"My Funny Valentine " was just amazing---I have one criticism--I think you know what I am going to say Jeff---she did not sing the verse!!

One of my favourites from last year was Kelly Pickler--she was so pretty, cute and funny--as well as a good singer---but I hardly recognised her---what have they done to her---her hair---and her dress---she just looked like a Dolly Parton Lookalike--I much preferred her, how she used to be.

I am not saying that anything is wrong with Dolly Parton, but I think there is only room for one Dolly !!

That's right--it is on ITV today--on Friday night it is on ITV.2. Well worth seeing I think--if you like that sort of thing----which I do !!
