RIP - DONNA SUMMER
RIP - DONNA SUMMER
Disco Queen Icon Donna Summer has passed away at the age of 63. She lost a battle with cancer. Just heard this 24 minutes ago. RIP Donna Summer!!
Re: RIP - DONNA SUMMER
I was shocked when Eamon emailed me with the news, I was only thinking days ago how quiet she was - I never knew she was ill.
Rest in peace my favourite 'Bad Girl'.

Karl, yeah only her close family knew that she was battling cancer. I wish they would find a cure for it and soon.

When I switched on the radio on this morning Ken Bruce was playing Donna & Barbra's duet.
Re: RIP - DONNA SUMMER
Karl, I was playing the long disco version on my ipod while I was doing my workout yesterday afternoon. One of the best duets ever!!

Re: RIP - DONNA SUMMER
Really sad to hear this news of Donna Summer If only there was a cure for this dreaded disease.
The problem would be easier if there was just one type of cancer but unfortunately there are so many different forms of cancer.
R.I.P. Donna Summer.

Re: RIP - DONNA SUMMER
I was extremely shocked when a friend emailed me this sad news -- I'm feeling the same as when I heard about Teena Marie's death on Boxing Day 2010. Teena provided the soundtrack for my first years with a professional job and Donna Summer provided the soundtrack for my college years. Many young people just don't realise how popular she was during those years. I remember Hot Stuff being #1 and then followed by Bad Girls. And then later came Dim All The Lights. The guy from Duran Duran said that I Feel Love was one of the most influential songs in music history and forever changed music. I think he's right about that.
I remember the street I was driving on (and the time of day) when I first heard No More Tears (Enough is Enough) on the radio. There was such a buildup with reports that they didn't get along in the studio (fighting over who got the best part) and some reports that they weren't even in the studio together. I agree Eman, one of the best intros ever: pure magic when the disco beat starts. I hope you have the really long version with that instumental interlude with the background singers. I just wished they made exciting recordings like this today. The ending was spectacular. And the song wasn't immediate; it had to grow on you.
The MacArthur Park Suite was stunning. At first some people weren't pleased that she took this on, but the entire medley works really well. I love how she changed the lyric to " the old men playing Chinese checkers".
Last night I listened to the entire version of Love To Love You Baby which I think is over 16 minutes long. This is the song that started her career. I remember driving to a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game with my parents and the single version was on the radio -- maybe not the best song to listen to with one's parents!
I loved On the Radio mostly because of the instrumental interlude and the lyrics which she masters. I've played Winter Melody several times the past couple days because it presents the tender, emotional side to Donna Summer.
Who remembers State of Independence, the African-style song she recorded with an all star choir and Quincy Jones producing? That album included her version of Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life. It is the best version of that jazz standard; there can be no debate on that.
Other vocal gems were I Love You, Spring Affair, Last Dance (must be the long version from Thank God It's Friday sountrack), Dinner With Gershwin, Sunset People, Our Love, Walk Away, and the big band styled I Remember Yesterday.
Thank you Donna for the music which will live on forever.
