HMV

Post by karl » Fri Feb 22, 2013 9:09 am

An assisant in Fopp told me Morrison's are taking over a lot of the stores when they close. I asked "Taikng them Over As HMV" he said no "As Supermarkets".

How many supermarkets do we need, I have seven within a few minutes drive! Two Tesco's, Two Morrison's, Waitrose, M&S & Sainsbury's. Also a few more miles down the road there is Asda. I also have Farmfoods a minute's walk from my house!

I heard that Morrison's were taking over the "Blockbuster" stores and turning them into mini--supermarkets--our Blockbusters was never that large--but I would like a Morrison's nearby, as it is impossible at the moment for me to get to one.

There are not nearly as many supermarkets round here, as you seem to have Karl, and many of them are only accessible by car as they are on huge out of town shopping sites--but no bus route--or if you are lucky, a 2 hourly bus service.

I got to our HMV in Tunbridge Wells on Monday--and it is still open--but looks really sad !! Nearly everything has big stickers with 25% off--three quarters of the store is filled with dvd's, i could not find the Easy Listening section in the [now tiny] cd area.

Everyone seems sad at their closing Marian, even my dentist yesterday he did not know they were all closing in Edinburgh and seemed sad when I told him they were.

The large branch on Princes St has many aisles closed as the browsers are empty, the separate Classical & Easy Listening section is closed and what's left is just in the main store. I suppose as they have less and less stock they will move everything to the ground floor.

Mariana and Karl, that sounds similiar to when the Tower Records closed here. Everything just started to dwindle down until the only stuff left was the stuff no one wanted to purchase. Everything had to go right down to the display racks!!!! Gee now no one is going to have the pleausre of saying "I'm going to the record store" anymore, unless it's an independent shop. Yet even those are starting to become few and far between. :( :(

I'm glad this never happened in the 60's as it woulda killed me. I was never happier than browsing in a good record store, that was my idea of heaven!!! Nowadays I don't buy that many.

I remember once in Tower in Boston I had so many cd's in my arms the assistant brought me a basket, until then I never even knew record stores had baskets (only supermarkets!) :D

There was a shop yesterday on tv called "Pie and Vinyl" and it was appearing to be very popular. The vinyl is new but looking as the old vinyl did, and the pies looked very good too! It's in Southsea.

OOO Marian, two of my favourite things Pie and Vinyl!!! LOL Sounds like my kinda store. Karl when Tower closed I was gutted, there went my Saturdays so I took to hanging out with vinyl minded people at Record City. We all hang out there for hours and talk records and stuff. We also listen to them or cds. So it's kind of like that movie "High Fidelity" or "Empire Records". LOL

I hope that HMV can survive. I read that the flagship at 150 Oxford St is very profitable. Trocadero is closing. A bit sad for me, because I bought The Singer's Singer CD set there many years ago.

Eman: I can't remember where the San Diego Tower was located. I know I was there. My goal was to visit every Tower in the world. My favourites in California were San Francisco, Sunset Blvd, with Sherman Oaks my very favourite. It was so sad when they were closing. I went from store to store in the Washington area, where Foggy Bottom, Tysons Corner and Rockville were the best. I still miss them and can't look at the buildings without thinking about Tower and all the hours I spent there.

I visited Tower in London, New York and the Boston store every time I visited that city. The Boston store was great and well laid out, New York was awful and the Londons store wasn't laid out so well either.

Paul, the first one was in Point Loma, and then on El Cajon Blvd and in La Jolla. I always went to the one in La Jolla as that was the one closest to my home. The Point Loma store was near my hospital so after my appointments I'd stop off there. I miss Tower. There was one in the Philippines and I didn't like it. I like the one in Japan, but I forgot where it was. It had 3 floors and was similar to the Virgin Mega Store at Cesar's Palace in Las Vegas which is now gone also!!

Our largest HMV store has taken down the Closing Down sign but the staff are still in the dark, I think that's unfair as they won't know whether to look for another job or not.

We have just returned from a short break in the lovely Northumberland and Durham area and on our day out at Newcastle we went to have a look round this impressive City and whilst there we called in at the Shopping Centre. We know Michele likes to know how Matt's CDs are faring in the shops and as we passed HMV we called in to have a look and there was one CD on display only called The Collection.

In our local HMV shop, after several months absence, Matt's index card has reappeared and we are pleased to say they have the following CDs in stock:

The Collection
Songs of Love
A Time for Love

Hopefully they will be able to start stocking the latest two CDs and we hope that the shops near you may be doing the same thing.

Morrisons is taking over wait-rose near us. ....makes sense as waitrose always quiet ...just hope all the workers get jobs

Yes it's not just supermarkets that are close by Maxine, if I want to leave the car and take the bus I only have to walk a few feet to the nearest bus stop, takes me about 30 seconds.
