June 6th D Day.

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Fri Jun 06, 2014 11:38 am

We are watching the Services dedicated to the veterans today to honour those brave men who survived and those who gave their lives for our freedom.
We attended the 60th Anniversary and saw on that day how those men were shown appreciation and were being so well looked after and from what we've seen today this will be no different and rightly so. For some it will be the last time to meet up with comrades as the Veterans Association is to be disbanded due to the men's ages now, ( many in their Nineties ) but without doubt those men will never forget their comrades.

It sickens me when I read of a footballl player being hailed a hero for scoring a goal, these veteran service people were and are the true hero's and keep us safe so we can sleep in our beds at night.

I have nothing but admiration for them. I also read that during the war when Vera Lynn sang for the troops she stayed in a tent and had the same conditions as them. I can hardly believe she is 97, I really hope she makes it to 100 and keeps well.

Did you read about the 89 year old veteran who was told by his care home that he couldn't go to Normandy for the remembrance celebrations. He went missing this morning, and wearing his war medals, he was found in France. He made it for the second time! The spirit goes on.

What a great spirit he must have and to organise a flight over too - well done!
