Steve Race RIP

Post by ROBERT M. » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:09 am

Popular TV and radio presenter Steve Race has passed away aged 88 :( :( I think his TV show from the 70's/80's was called Face the Music ?? which I enjoyed watching very much.

I just saw that sad news on Teletext. The radio show he did for many years was called "My Music"--I have a feeling "Face the Music" was a different show. I am just trying to remember if he did the one with Joyce Grenfell, and Robin Ray, which I think may have been "Face the music "

Steve Race was born in my home town Lincoln. My Dad used to play in the local bands with him.
I just googled Steve Race yesterday and there was a really good write up about him from the Daily Telegraph 22nd June.
It tells you everything you wanted to know about him.

And of course there was a Matt connection too. Matt was resident singer on a radio series hosted by Steve Race called Music About Town in the 1950's

I have a copy of Steve Race's autobiography, entitled "Musician at Large" which is an interesting read. I was hoping for some reference to Matt but there is none unfortunately.
R.I.P. Steve.

That's really sad news. A brilliant pianist, We used to enjoy his programme when he was chairman of "My Music" on the radio and Face The Music on TV.

Ah-that explains my confusion, 2 different shows with different titles-one Tv and one on radio.

George and I always used to watch the one on Tv.

We remember when Steve Race would play dumb notes on the piano and the panel would have to try to guess the piece of music that he was playing.
I don't think we ever worked one of those out. :)

We are taking your advice Robert. In fact we had fish for lunch today.
Steve Race's first job was with The Harry Leader Band, who Matt sang with. Just thought i'd give that a mention, because not a lot of people know that. :) :)

I e-mailed the BBC to ask why there was no obituary to Steve, and 2 hours later, one had appeared on the site.
Coincidence or not?
Not only did I enjoy listening to Steve on "Mt Music" but also on "Many a Slip" where he set the musical challenges on what IMHO is the best radio show ever (with the late Roy Plomley). Education and entertainment combined; shame that the shows are not repeated on BBC7 (I think that a handful were aired again a few years back)
