Capturing LP to hi-res file and removing clicks etc is an art form. lol U have to be patient and have hi-quality equipment which can be expensive but it's well worth it. I did try this myself and actually like doing it but my equipment isn't high quality and i don't have the money to do it but long term plan maybe someday as i want to upgrade my turntable first. I still think that vinyl has a better sound stage than CD and sounds great with piano and guitar sounds which CD struggles with sometimes of course it just depends on the quality of recording in the first place.

I think a lot of music recordings were made by recording artist's on DAT but im no expert. (high quality cassette for people that dont know)

As for the USB turntables they are great for a quick transfer etc but not for a high quality transfer.

My equipment isn't really high end but serves the purpose.

I have copied lps to cds via a Sony cd copier, via my stereo---you can get a good result--as long as the orginal Lp is in perfect condition, but any scratches etc, will copy to the cd. I have also copied cassette tapes to cd--mostly tapes from live concerts--and they sound reasonably good, considering the equipment I use---like a Walkman with an exterior speaker.

I still have some cassette tapes but as I haven't listened to them for so long they sound very muffled when I try to play them and most, if not all, of the music on them is now available on CD anyway. While I'm not concerned about the demise of cassette tapes, I can't say the same for the possible death of the CD. I still think that a recognisable album product which you can hold in your hand is preferable to a digital download of music. Or maybe I'm just getting old...

Jon many people feel the same, I don't download and like you prefer to own a copy of the cd, however vinyl has made a great comeback and that was confirmed on my recent trip to Australia where I was surprised at the selection available and I was told the quality is much improved. I still miss an LP sleeve as so many cd's have such small print you'd need bionic eyes to read it.

I second that Karl. Lps are making a comeback though in limited quality and only on certain titles.

Jon -- I recorded so many songs off the radio that have never been released on CD. So I bought a machine that will copy my LPs and cassettes to CD.

Eman -- I can't recall which thread you mentioned the 16 and 78 speeds of a record player. I've been told that16 was used for spoken word recordings, but I've never seen a record with 16 speed. I guess you're too young to get the 78 childrens records. I had a lot of them in the 1960s and they were always great colors (yellow, red, green); I loved my 78s by the Flintstones and the Jetsons. I also had some great Christmas records of speed 78. I will need to copy all of them to CD too!

Paul, the first time I heard of those speeds (16 and 78) was when I got a phonograph for Xmas in 1972. I was 8 years old at the time, so yeah I never saw a 16 record or a 78. My brother and I used to play my James Brown 45's on 78 and we thought it was the funniest thing!!!
