Eurovision 2008 - The National Finalists!

Post by michduncg » Mon Apr 07, 2008 4:34 pm

I searched and searched for a Eurovision 2008 thread on here - maybe I missed it

Well, the countries have finalised their selections just about. The Swedish contender linked below WASN'T chosen during the SIX week SWEDISH selection process unfortunately  And its a real shame that the much loved Treaty of Lisbon will do away with a European Anthem, as this song would have been a worthy contender!!

Get your crackers ready, this one is VERY cheesy! Its Christer Sjögren and - 'I Love Europe'

We did mention it briefly somewhere Mike--at the time.

I think we were quite surprised at the winning contestant--Andy Abraham--and I certainly thought that Simona would have been a better choice,

Hi Marian

Yes, I remember that thread - and to distinguish it, I've retitled this one! Its all gone a bit quiet on the Andy Abraham front, I've not heard his track get much airplay, which is a shame.

When is Eurovision held? I've only heard the French entry, Divine, by Sebastian Tellier. Have you heard it yet? I loved his song from a few years ago called La Ritournelle.

Hi Jeff. Eurovision is on May 24th this year. Not listened to all of the tracks yet. France had a great song in 2007, where they sang in English for the 1st time.

Well, Christer's "I Love Europe" couldn't have been more cheesier than Scooch's effort Mike, and we're still laughing at some of last years comments like ... I dont think crooning in Germany really works, but great flat caps, and I had to hide the crystal during Slovenia the insurance policy wouldn't have paid out, and Spain were like The Backstreet boys, but in tune.
Anyway keep us in tune with the forthcoming one Mike, we enjoy reading your posts

I expect you have this Mike, but there's a double CD on ebay of all the 2nd place songs in Eurovision over the years. Of course, our Matt is on it for 1964 with "I Love the Little Things".
The last time we came second was 1998 I see. I was surprised we were doing well so recently, but since then - nowhere!!!!

Hi Marian - yes, we have that CD, and in fact Marc (the other 'arf!) blames me for his current obssesion with Eurovision! Since meeting me, he has downloaded (dare I admit this  ) EVERY song ever to enter the Eurovision. Thats the danger of having a 700Mb hard-drive I suppose!

As you know, we enjoyed years contest in Helsinki, even down to 'Krisi' in her pink dress! Scooch were funny, but there were some good tunes, including Germany and Lativa, who had their version of G4 singing in a song called 'Questa Notta'

Matts contribution was a great tune brilliantly executed, as was many of his contemporaries. In those days the competition was more of a music festival I think - a bit like Montreux! Nowadays its all about the spectacle. But its still turns up a few great tunes, we love Swedens actual entry this year, performed by Charlotte Perrell, who won in 1999 with 'Take me to your heaven'.

Nobody soes wind machines and dramatic key changes like Sweden, as witnessed in this performance by Carola in 2006 'Invincible' - we were sure this was a winner until Finland came along with Lordi in their demon suits!

No footage survives from Copenhagen when Matt made his performance, but there is some vintage Kathy Kirby
