Brian Matthew. " Sounds Of The Sixties"

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Sat Jan 28, 2017 10:49 am

Sad that Brian Matthew no longer presents the long running Saturday programme " Sounds Of The Sixties". Brian had an extra special tone and warmth that matched his charming personality and we miss him. Thanks BBC. :x
We know that time changes and he has now been replaced by Tim Rice "(due to a bout of Brians poor health)" who no doubt is doing a great job but this programme will always be associated with Brian.

I agree L & H Brian's warm voice and knowledge made SOTS. Somehow I can't take to Tim Rice as he sounds cold and clinical.
If you remember the last time Brian was off several stars stood in for him one being Sandie Shaw and she was great as she threw herself into the show and just bubbled over with enthusiasm.

Yes, I know what you mean Karl. Sandie Shaw from that era would know what was most popular at that time and what the listeners really want to hear. :)

A bit of a different version of events in todays Daily Mail.He had a fall in November and the BBC said that it was 'mutually agreed that it was the right time for Mr Matthew to step off the weekly treadmill of presenting the show' Brian says 'balderdash' etc :?

The BBC has shown on several occasions not to be credible, and that serving them for Fifty or more years means little to this corporation. Jimmy Young was one example. A number of loyal and regular listeners to Sounds Of The Sisties including Facebook have shown their dismay at this decision, and now today we have read that the BBC were discussing a series of programmes with Brian. Why. Is this a quietener ?? Just give him his Saurday slot back. !!

I agree Robert but would have to include Steve Wrights Sunday Love Songs as most of his 'choices' come around at some point we know that their will be a 'Matt track' :D :D

I was not aware Desmond Carrington had been "sacked". Many of these presenters are rather old now and maybe want to retire? David Jacobs passed away not long after he stepped down .

What a shame that Brian will not be returning. I alway listen to SOTS on iplayer, probably a couple of times for each edition.

Didn't Johnny Walker do an extended run a few years ago? He suits the 60s era.

There is a petition on Facebook to reinstate Brian back on the programme, I have just shared and signed it.

It is such a shame that they have done this to Brian it was the same with poor Jimmy Young throwing him on one side for Jeremy Vine, he so wanted to carry on with the show.
Also his programme was loads better than Jeremy's in every way, such a shame.
