TERRY WOGAN vs CHRIS EVANS.

Post by mariana44 » Mon Sep 07, 2009 1:49 pm

Who heard Terry this morning saying he was giving up on his morning show--quite a surprise to me--and I thought it was quite a moving speech--if you do a search on Terry Wogan-it gives the whole speech, so you can listen to it again.

Quite honestly, I think Terry has passed his best, and sometimes in the morning, I have to turn him off, because he waffles on so much---and his Janet and John stories and singing drive me mad !

I am really glad Chris Evans is taking over, as I listen to him every night, and really like him--much as I expected not to.

As long as Jonathan Ross does not take over from Chris !!!!!

We are sad that Terry is going really. He has always seemed a genuinely nice person.
We particularly remember when he and Jimmy Young had their regular morning banter, but surprised that Radio 2 is replacing him with Chris Evans. Hasn't he let them down in the past.??
A better choice would be Ed Stewart or Gloria Hunniford who has stood in for Terry on occasions.. :) :)

I am not saying that I do not like Terry--as a person--I just think he has outgrown that job--and yes, either of those other 2 would be good replacements--or maybe Ed Stewart willl take over Chris Evans show--as long as Jonathan Ross is not in the equation, I am happy !!!!

Many people were upset when Chris Evans took over for Johnny Walker on drivetime. But he seems to be doing well in that timeslot.

Sarah Kennedy was not a fan when Chris came to Radio 2. I think she was appalled when he showed up for a BBC Christmas party in blue jeans. But she later said that he was so kind to her when she was off with pneumonia and the newspapers were saying she had a breakdown. She said Chris always wished her well and was very kind. So she quickly became a Chris Evans fan and mentions his programme occasionally.

I agree with Marian that Terry Wogan has become a bit stale along with the music he plays. Now if Jo Whiley would replace Ken Bruce I'd be very happy; Ken has become very stale in the mornings -- seems to play the same old songs. Jo would be great with Popmaster and the live lounge.

I have made my views known on this site in the past about Sir Terry in connection with his position as former Eurovision host! I do like his Radio 2 show especially some of his regular contributors (Chuffer Dandridge in particular). Lets face it, Terry has been doing this show for much of our lifes. I remember him doing the breakfast show when I was bout 12! He still good. But I do think some of the 'is it me.... type comments are very repetitive

As for Chris Evans, he had reliability issues when he was Radio 1 but not at Radio 2 where his Drive time show is terrific. As for Sarah Kennedy -I prefer it when Lisa Tarbuck sits in - now she is FANTASTIC!

I read somewhere that Liza Tarbuck might eventually take over Ken Bruce's slot. :D :D

I liked Liza Tarbuck--I also like Emma Forbes and Zoe Ball, who have early morning shows-one on Saturday-one on Sunday.

I thought that Zoe was really good when she stood in for Ken Bruce recently.

I read that someone is taking over from Chris Evans-but I have forgotten who-I recognised the name, but it is not someone I have ever listened to before--I expect iIshall remember as soon as I switch off. !!

Glad I am not alone liking Liza (sorry, I forgot she was with a 'z') - but then who couldn't!!

Hi Marian - Zoe Ball, Mo Dutter and Brian Matthews have all kept me company in the car on the long drive to Solihull every Saturday morning! I really liked Mo Dutter and was a little perturbed when Zoe Ball took over. But within a week or two I warmed to her. Emma Forbes has always been lovely, and is quite a good side kick to Alan Carr, she is definitely the better broadcaster of the two!

I believe Simon Mayo may be in line to take over from Chris Evans. The speculation now is about what time Chris Evans may start his breakfast show (R1 start theirs at 6.30 for instance) and the possible consequences for Sarah Kennedy......

That was him--Simon Mayo---I know the name, but not much else about him.

I assumed that Chris would take over at 7.30, just like Terry did. but on saying that , Sarah has been unwell quite a lot recently--maybe all these early mornings have got to her--who knows !!

The BBC are probably waiting to get rid of Sarah next as they did Malcolm Laycock.
It is certainly not the choice of music these days that makes me tune into Radio 2.The 'playlist' leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.
I love Sarah,Terry,Ken,Jeremy and Steve so will reserve judgement for whoever takes over from any of them :?

By starting the show earlier than 7:30, Chris Evans can increase the number of listeners. He could also add a half hour on the end and cut Ken Bruce down to two hours. Basically they want to get a high number of listeners for the breakfast show and the longer time will help that.

I hope that Sarah Kennedy can stay on Radio 2. There's no one quite like her! I've never heard of Lisa Tarbuck.

I enjoyed Mo Dutta's show (especially with Simon Calder) when he was on Saturdays and Sundays, but have never listened to Zoe Ball. Mike: is Simon Calder still on Saturday mornings with Zoe?

Hi Paul

Liza Tarbuck is a comedy actress turned TV presenter. She is the daughter of a well known and well loved comedian, Jimmy Tarbuck. He gained huge popularity in the early 1960s and, being from Liverpool, was part of the invasion of the 'Northerners' onto the TV screens and airwaves of the era. Liza is a very warm and witty presenter, in her mid 40s who was in a wonderfull sitcom 'Watching' about 20 years ago. Following that she worked alongside cheeky ex-con Johnny Vaughan on the anarchic Channel 4 breakfast show 'The Big Breakfast', which also had given Chris Evans his big break in the mid-late 90s. Liza was 'parachuted' in after the disastrous appointment of Kelly Brookes who had shown herself unable to keep up with Johnny Vaughan's tremendously quick wit. Liza has made several 'sit-in' appearances on Radio 2 of late, teaming up with the comica actor Martin Freeman to present slots to cover Jonathan Ross in his forced leave of absence, as well as covering Sarah Kennedy during her bout of illness. She has a really unique, very English style of broadcasting - very mumsy, very clean and very very funny.

Paul, it is very spooky as my favourite spot on Mo Duttas show was Simon Calder, a brilliant travel reporter. Sadly he is not part of the package with Zoe Ball, although her Dad, Johnny is quite entertaining and makes weekly appearance. He was big on kids TV in the UK in the 70s and is a very talented mathmetician. Zoe Ball also served on the Big Breakfast, alongside Chris Evans, but was best know in the UK for presenting the BBCs flagship Saturday morning kids TV extravaganza, Going Live.

Simon Calder does make regular appearances on BBC News, mainly on the weekend breakfast show. Its funny, but being a Europhile, I like to watch the BBC Europe News but you can't get that on BBC UK News channels - it occasionally pops up on the Parliament Channel. Oddly I can get a Russian news channel on my freeview service. But Deutche Welche is the best European news.

PS - in his drive time show tonight, Chris Evans commented that he was getting help with ideas for his new Breakfast Show format from Steve Wright. He also hinted about he awareness that easy listening would have to be a big part of his new playlist. I have a lot of respect for Chris Evans now, I think he has mellowed a lot, although whether he'll ever play any Cliff Richard (who he famously banned from Virgin when he owned the station!) I'm sure he is aware of the tremendous loyalty and unique interaction that Terrys listeners have been used to and will try to build on that. Terrys play list has been very eclectic and I am sure that Chris will be no different.
