The World Cup( what d'ya think of it so far ?)

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Sat Jun 10, 2006 8:51 am

Well, in a nut shell, from the two games we watched yesterday, we've little to fear, but well done to Germany and Equador on their winning result.
Let's see some urgency today at least , and "Come On England".

Hi Lena and Harry---well I think I will only be watching the England games---but keeping my fingers crossed. As it is 40 years since we last won, I think if we even got to the semi-finals that would be a good result--not quite as good as winning, obviously!!

FIFA song

Does anyone like the World Cup song that is playing everyday on my radio? Toni Braxton is in danger of being overshadowed by Il Divo but the song is catchy.

Hi Lena and Harry and everyone. What do we think of it so far you ask......................Rubbish. Only kidding. England none a 1-0 win against Paraguay this afternoon, but at least they didn't lose, which is the main thing. They can only get better, hopefully. When England took Micheal Owen off in the second half, poor Peter Crouch was left isolated up front. Was the heat to blame, but it was the same for both team's. But as I said, at least they didn't lose which would have been a terrible start for them.
"The Italian Job" is just about to come on. I will watch the beginning, with Matt singing "On Day's Like These". It sound's good on the film soundtrack.

Robert, you have said it all, we none home to win 1-0 but yes the weather e.t.c, but at least we've survived and won the first game. Can't understand the tactics played and Crouch left with out support.
We also watched the beginning of The Italian job.
Now for the next match....... :) :) :)

Hi all--well, I have to admit it was not very exciting---apart from the first 5 minutes---thankfully we held on to the lead.

I cannot say that I like the stadium---the shadows seemed awfully offputting--and it looked like a glass roof, or was I mistaken---that would have made it even hotter on the field, I would imagine.

I like games with lots of goals, or at least attempts at goals---I did not see much today.

Hi Mariana44, Lena and Harry and everyone. Mariana44 it wasn't a glass roof, but the stadium had something like a large 4 sided screen built directly above the playing area, which was kept in the air by large metal strand's, going from one side of the stadium to the other. All the shadow's and reflection's seen during the match came from that monstrosity. The England goalkeeper Paul Robinson actually hit that THING, while kicking the ball upfield, on one occasion. The referee actually stopped play because of it.

Hi Marian, Robert, Terence, the shadows did rather spoil the enjoyment, and what with the camera's distance shots at the beginning and the picture suddenly blacking out, 8) and somebody should have sent the ref off, the sun was obviously affecting him. Terence we haven't yet heard the football chant but they seemed to be sticking to the "Three Loins On His Shirt," we liked that one.
Anyway after the Trinidad V Sweden result, things are looking up for us. :) :) :)

Hello Lena and Harry and everyone. Best game of the tournament so far, Argentina v. Ivory Coast, definitely. End to end entertainment, I thought the Ivorian's deserved something out of the game, they were so fast, skillful and had boundless energy. Didier Drogba is a class act. I hope they can qualify for the next round, but that group is going to be very tight.
"Three Lion's" is THE football song for the England team now isn't it. So catchy and makes you feel proud to hear it, and it sound's really good when you hear the crowd singing it nice and loud.
P.S. Lena and Harry, I hope they had a CLOTH big enough, to cover his three loin's.

Hi all--yes I also think that "Three Lions" is the best football song ever--one that I heard today-"Who do you think you are kidding , Jurgen Klinsmann" [ as in Dad's Army ] was pretty awful I thought.

Thanks for explaining about the "glass roof" for me---it seems I was not the only one to be distracted by the shadows!

Hello Everyone

I'm loving the World Cup - wall to wall footy - Argentina vs Ivory Coast was a cracking game last night - I just wish we had football on the telly from 4pm to midnight EVERYDAY of the week, forever! (I mean, come on, nobody is bothered about soap opera's, are they?)
There simply isn't enough football on the television these days ;)

Come On England!

Hi Gray, we're in complete agreement, and loving every ball being played.
The Argentina v. Ivory coast , were the only game up to now that really displayed good clean cut football skills.
Gotta go the teams will be out any minute.  BYE FOR NOW

Hi Lena and Harry, Gray and everyone. The World Cup and European Championship's are something special to look forward to, especially when the World Cup is played on European soil, as the times of the matches suite us. But if, as you say Gray, football was on continously I think most other non-football fan's would get sick of it. Only the absolute soccer addict's, like yourself by the sound of it, would love it.
Let's just hope for some exciting matches in the next few week's Gray, it's not very exciting watching drab matches, is it. Mind you I don't mind if England play poorly, as long as they do well in the tournament. But after yesterday's match England can only improve, can't they, especially if Sven play's the right player's, :!: :!: and doesn't leave a player like Crouch or any other player isolated up front.

Hi Robert,

Yes, I'll take your comments on board.
But I must just stress that my tongue was firmly in my cheek when I made the comments regarding soap opera's (unless the commissioning editor of the BBC is reading this in which case I meant everything I said :)), I do realise that television needs to be balanced.
Therefore I'm prepared to accept one soap every third Tuesday of the month to be shown at 4am. (Unless there has been a football match the previous evening in which case the soap would have to make way for edited highlights of the game). Fair? ;)

I was just wondering, does anybody know if Matt Monro had a favourite team (if indeed he followed football)?
