I'll be sure to listen to David Jacobs this week. Thanks for telling us about it.

Where did you read or hear about these Radio 2 changes, Lena and Harry? Does anyone know what has happened to Melodies For You? I hope they keep Sunday Half Hour, Your 100 Best Tunes, and Malcolm L's programmes. I enjoy listening to these programmes while reading the Sunday newspapers when I'm in the UK. I'm sure they realise that David Jacobs is very popular, and that's why they are keeping him.

I really hope they don't touch Friday Night Is Music Night. It is such an institution and you can always learn about new artists and new music on that programme.

I partially agree with you Robert in that Radio 1 and Radio 2 are often playing the same songs. But actually there's still quite a bit of difference in the new songs they play. I often prefer the new songs that Radio 1 plays so I'm finding myself back at Radio 1 recently! My problem with the Radio 2 playlist is when they put a song on the A list like Annie Let's Not Wait by the Guillemots; besides being a bad song, it would hold no appeal to an adult audience. And they play these songs over and over. But I still enjoy Sarah Kennedy and Ken Bruce's programme and the "listen again-advance 5 minutes" button is a great tool to avoid tired old American rock songs from the 1970s and 1980s.

Please keep me posted on the Radio 2 changes. Thanks!

What I mean, is that in the 80's - 90's Radio 1 was a "pop" station with all the latest sounds and new releases, whereas Radio 2 was just really an easy listening type of music station. But today, Radio 2 is playing exactly the type of music that Radio 1 used to do. Which means there is hardly anywhere on Radio 2, for the "easy" music to go, it is being "pushed aside". Daft having "TWO" Radio 1's

I somewhat see what you're saying, Robert. BBC radio execs feel that the old Radio 1 audience has now moved to Radio 2. Since Radio 1 never played easy listening, they will slowly phase out easy listening. But there's still more easy listening music on Radio 2 than any US station. I still think Radio 2 has an absolutely fascinating format with chart hits and oldies during the day, and evenings and week-ends of organ tunes, classical music, R & B, rock, Broadway, big band, standards. There's nothing like it in the world.

Basically the target audience for Radio 1 is age 16 - 30 and one middle-aged American. The Radio 2 audience is 30 - 65?, with Friday nights, Sundays, and select programmes meant to appeal to ages 25 - 105.

Hi Paul--it is so surprising--yet flattering---- that you know so much about our Radio programmes.

I have NEVER listened to Radio 1. When I was in that age group it was not around !!

Because we were otherwise engaged last Sunday evening attending Al Martino's concert we missed David Jacob's programme, so have caught up and this Sunday once again David's playlist includes our Matt's recording of That Old Feeling,  from the album Matt n Mel.
There are also some other great songs with Three from Frank Sinatra.

You must have been reading my mind. I was just thinking yesterday that it's been a long time since David Jacobs played a Matt Monro song. I don't check the list of songs played each week, but rely on your expert reporting! I'll listen to the programme later today. I've never heard That Old Feeling.

Hi Paul, sorry but we realise that we perhaps confused you with our posting on David's programme. Matt's That Old Feeling" recording is on the playlist for this forthcoming Sunday the 25th.

I'm listening to David Jacobs right now. He's played three too many Frank Sinatra songs. I think I'll find the David Jacobs collection and steal the Frank Sinatra duets album. Why does he still focus on this album when it was out years ago? There's so much better music to play. Just a few weeks ago he played that simply awful version of I've Got A Crush On You with Barbra Streisand and now he's featuring it again. Thank goodness for the 5 minute advance feature to advance through Sinatra and Robert Goulet.

It has been a good week for Matt Monro on Radio 2: David Jacobs, Elaine Paige, and he was featured in a question on Popmaster last week (Who had the hit version of the song Born Free most associated with Matt Monro? >>I didn't know the answer.).

I guess you're right Robert, but I don't know any of these people. Actually I think I stated the Popmaster question wrong. I think Mark Goodier said something like:

In 1991 Vic Reeves and the Roman Numerals had the hit version of a song most closely associated with Matt Monro. Name the song.

Speaking of Born Free, Alan Titchmarsh played the instrumental version from the film. It was interesting that the Matt Monro arrangement is almost the same as the film instrumental version. I really enjoyed Melodies For You on Sunday. He plays a perfect mix of classical, film, choral, opera, operetta, and Broadway music. I think I'll listen to it every week.

We agree with you Paul, Alan Titchmarsh has been playing a really nice selection of music on "Melodies For You".
This programme was previously and excellently presented by Sheridan Morley who passed away just over a week ago on the 16th Feb. David Jacobs spoke of Sheridan and of his sadness in losing a very good friend.
We were also sad to hear this news too. We had met Sheridan's father that wonderful actor Robert Morley on two or Three occasions.

I didn't know Sheridan Morley had died, what a great actor his father was, I remember him in many roles from Miss Marple with Margaret Rutherford to War and Rememberance with Robert Mitchum, Wogan interviewed him a couple of times, a very funny and interesting man.

Another perfect start to David's programme this evening with Matt's "Come Back To Me." .... followed by the brilliant Stephen Sonheim's music being the Three Common Denominator songs.
We will keep our fingers crossed for your Frances Langford request Robert.
