Dusty

Post by Terence Lee » Fri Mar 02, 2007 1:39 pm

Just watched the DVD of Dusty Springfield's classic Royal Albert Hall concert from 1974. I really like how she worked that crowd into such a frenzy. The highlight for me was "Quiet Please, There's A Lady On Stage". She started this song quietly in a melancholy way and by the end of the song, she had built it into a showstopper. Bravo Dusty, the songstress from UK with the soulful voice!

I watched "State Fair" of 1962 this afternoon Marian. I have to agree with yourself that this version is a good one - slightly different from the 1945 version- but good nonetheless, but not as good as the original film. But that is an incorrect statement really, as a B&W non musical version of the film was made in 1933 starring Will Rodgers  I thought all the stars of the 1962 version were excellent. Pat Boone shone as Wayne Frake, so handsome and energetic, plus he has a really good voice, he looked the part. Ann-Margaret looked great in the film too. Ma and Pa Frake were also very good, the Ma being played by 20's and 30's movie star Alice Faye, who came out of retirement for the role. I started to watch the commentary of the film, by Pat Boone. I love to watch those commentaries, as I find them very interesting :D :D

No mention of Bobby Darin!! He was a better singer than an actor, although he made a few lightweight comedy films with Sandra Dee, who became his wife.

Yes Marian, Bobby only had a smallish part in the film really, but he looked very professional and sounded really good. I know you like Mr Darin, Marian

the new Bond

Post by Terence Lee » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:46 am

The new James Bond is my favourite Bond!

Watched Casino Royale on DVD last night and I must say the movie met all my expectations. Loved the twist at the end.

Daniel Craig has done an excellent job! His Bond is more human and real.

I haven't seen it yet. I will hopefully buy the DVD, but Terence has now told us there is a twist at the end, which I didn't know about

Watched Blood Diamond on DVD tonight. Boy, it was long at almost 138 minutes. Leonardo Dicaprio is all grown up now including sideways. I like the way Jennifer Connelly's eyes light up when she applauded Djimon Hounsou in the last scene. Fast, furious and brutal but ultimately profound and touching. Not to be missed!

To be honest the DVD Matt Monro - a profile has been played a lot this weekend :) and before that the DVD of Matt's lost concert. As for films the last one I watched was "2046" starring among others, the great Tony Leung, Carina Lau and Zhang Ziyi.

Hi Sheila

2046 is not the easiest movie to appreciate. The pacing is so deliberate and the director's eye for detail means the film plays like an art movie. I have seen it once, appreciated it of course but also yawned through it. It is not something I can watch often.

The Queen

Post by Terence Lee » Mon Mar 12, 2007 3:32 pm

Helen Mirren is regal and restrained in The Queen and I am glad I bought the DVD after much thought.
However she is no match for Dame Judi Dench judging from her Golden Globes & Oscar acceptance speeches. I just love the British accent when it is as crisp and effective as the way Dame Judi Dench delivered her lines in Casino Royale.

Hi Terence, Dame Judi Dench delivers a speech in the movie " Mrs Henderson."
Now that's crisp and effective.
