Eleanor Powell on Youtube

Post by ROBERT M. » Wed Jan 31, 2007 2:29 am

If anyone wants to watch the scintillating tap dance between Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire to the tune of "BeginThe Beguine" just click onto the following link. (The clip is the full 9 minute sequence, the tap dance is towards the end) but it is BRILLIANT-

Thats a lovely routine. I have a particular fondness for this one as it was one of the first good tap routines I learnt. I sure didn't do it like Eleanor though!

Eleanor Powell was underated IMHO. A better dancer than Ginger, yet Ginger did have that certain *something*. Now don't even get me started on Ann Miller! :D She was amazing!

You will soon learn Francesca, that Robert just loves Ellie [as he calls her],
and she can do no wrong !! He even wrote a poem about her--and it was very, very good.

I wonder where Francesca vanished to ?

But just to let anyone know that HMV now have the Broadway Melody of 1940, starring Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell at an astonishing £2.99.................it had been £12.99 since it's release.

The film is in Black and White, but the quality is outstanding...............the story of the film is quite goo too...................then there is the tap challenge between Fred and Ellie...............sumptuous....................a bargain for anyone at £2.99 :D

Thanks for the information on Broadway Melody Robert. We'll have a look at that.
Although we have this matchless Powell and Astaire tap-dancing

Yes, Roberts poem is very impressive Keith. We haven't checked but Robert himself will confirm if it is still on Ellies web-site.

I posted the Ellie poem about two years ago, but I cannot find it on Ellies website now, it must have been taken down :( I do not think I kept a copy of the poem either. It was a 100 line poem :)

Wow, Robert
A poem of one hundred lines qualifies for the epithet,
epic. Have you written one in praise of our eponymous
patron? (I can't resist a bit of alliteration.) My favourite
paean to Matt is entitled, Omnipresence, yet it hasn't
attracted many reads. However, that is much less serious
than the loss of your Ellie piece. We poets have to suffer
for our art, don't we? :(
