Yes, but when there were more of the Western European Countries included, they all voted for one another too, so we can never get anywhere, as nobody loves, or even likes us, anymore!!!!!
It is just embarrassing for our entrants to have to go through this humiliation every year. Time to pull out I think...

The Eurovision can only be summed up in one word. Tripe.
You are right Marian, the voting is disgraceful and totally unfair.
It is all about those who can dress up in the most outrageous costumes with hideous make-up.
When this contest began in the earlier years, it was all about the singer or the group singing alone and judged by the voices.
We were as baffled and as irritated as Terry Wogan was at that lady in pink who was prancing around. Who did she have to pay to be on this calamity night.

Greetings from Helsinki!!

Just grabbed a few minutes on the PC here at the Raddison SAS Seaside (thats Dockside to you and me!) Hotel. Having a wonderful time so far in this very attractive city.

We had a fantastic day on Friday, all went wonderfully well. Left a grey and wet manchester airport for a bright and sunny Helsinki, where the sun doesn't set until 11pm and starts rising again at 2am!

What to say about the Eurovision?! We were in Senate Square with a crowd of about 10, 000 others watching on several hugh TV screens. The lucky people had managed to get seats on a huge set of steps that run along the North Side of the Square. The atmosphere was fantastic with people from all over Northern Europe and the Baltic States makingup the main audience. They went wild for Finland (of course), liked Sweden, Greece, Turkey, Russia (their neighbour) and..... Ukraine! There was not so much enthusiasm for UK (although Marc and I did our best), Germany (my favourite song) or France.

When it came to the voting, there were genuine looks of disappointment from those supporting Turkey, Russia and Sweden. A huge roar went up everytime the Finns got a vote, and Marc and I shouted ourselves hoarse when the UK got its points.

It was odd not having Sir Terrys unique commentary, but we thought the production itself was very good, with the humourous (in a Scandinavian kind of way) inserts between each entry. The hosts seemed a very slick and not to be taking it all too seriously, and we had to take part in the auidnece participaition when the ´lady in pink´wwo I think was called Krisse kept popping up. This involved singing the Eurovision anthem aand shouting 'hello Europe' - not sure how it all came out on air though

All in all a tremendous evening although we are glad we didn't pay to go to see it in the arena - we think we had a much better time outside. And yes the voting was all over the place - not sure how you get around that though.

Bye for now - speak to you again from Tallinn!!
Michael

Hi Mike--good to hear from you and Marc, and glad that all went well on Friday.

I bet you had a much better time in Helsinki, than us watching on TV---it is easy to get caught up in the atmosphere when you are in a crowd..Every time a rubbish song came on [nearly all of them]-I would say--"And what did you think of that--Chloe----or Harry"----but I think they were dumbstruck, as I got no replies

At least you did your bit to help "Fly the flag"!! Scooch were nowhere near as bad as the score implied.

Really good to hear from you Mike, and to hear all went well for you and Marc on your Ceremony Day. Also how much you enjoyed Eurovision! As Mariana mentioned, it's the atmosphere that really makes these events, something that didn't really come across on tv. Well done on your efforts to "Fly the Flag" for the U.K anyway.
Scooch, or rather three of them, were on "Breakfast" this morning, and they sounded to have had a whale of a time too.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday Mike and Marc, look forward to hearing from you again.

Hi All,

What can I say about Eurovision that hasn't already been said here!
I have just about recovered from the experience and the doctor says that if I keep taking the tablets for a few more days, I should be back to my normal self again soon - whatever that maybe!

"Flying the flag" by Scooch was certainly better than some of the songs on Saturday night but of course we didn't get many votes because we don't have many mates in Eastern Europe or anywhere else for that matter!

Did anyone spot The Swedish singer who looked like the son of Ozzy Osborne? He then tore his shirt off to reveal.......a chest! Yes very original mate!

Sir Terry is right, maybe we should just keep turning up every year just for the fun of it!
I see that Terry is on holiday now for two weeks! Let's hope he returns refreshed after his spell in the home for the bewildered!

Even if he entered Katie Melua, Tony Christie or Matt Jr, I don't think we would do well so we might as well just carry on "Flying the flag" and enjoying the event for what it is........a light entertainment show full of colour and bad singing plus over the top presenters.

Hi to Mike and Marc - glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves last week. 8) :D

Good to hear from you Mike and so glad that you and Marc are having a great time, and Friday was specially wonderful too.
You no doubt had a better time outside being with the crowds and
by now you will probably have read and heard the comments and opinions of this fiasco. We have heard a few too. Most of them just one syllable.

hello again all - interesting to read the comments as always. as we are on mainland Europe at the moment we've been asking a few people here what they think of the UK in Eurovision and most people (well the 4 or 5 we have spoken to!) all say that they hate Terry Wogan and his attitude towards Europe. Its that, and the fact that we never seem to take the whole thing seriously that they hold against us.

That said the voting does need looking at, to ensure that its more balanced and to ensure that all countries have a chance of winning. Its certainly time for a shake up

Good to see that you are still keeping an eye on us, Mike

I guess Terry Wogans humour takes some getting used to---especially if you are not British !!

But there has been a great deal of controversy over the voting this year--more than I have seen before---with suggestions to change the voting----or maybe have 2 contests ie. a Western and an Eastern Eurovision---or for Uk just to pull out of it altogether!!!

I see you're keeping both eyes on us Mike, getting a double post in!!
Also, interesting that you've been doing some research into Eurovision from the mainland European perspective. I'd never thought Terry Wogan's contribution would be seen outside the U.K. but maybe he is!! :? :?
I can quite understand them not understanding his special brand of humour

Even an MP is getting in on the "voting act" - saying it should change, or the BBC should pull the plug on the show :D

It's a shame that our "friends" in Europe don't share our sense of humour.
Maybe they should lighten up a little and laugh along with the UK.
That's the thing about us here in England, we can laugh at this sort of contest but sadly a lot of others take themselves and Eurovision far TOO seriously!

Here's to Sir Terry - long may he continue to present the Eurovision Song Contest and tell everyone just how the UK feels about it. Some folk out there just don't like the truth told do they?!
I'm sure Terry would be very amused to hear that others in Europe are talking about him!

The Eurovision Song Contest just wouldn't be the same without Terry, he is renowned for his banter and his comments, and his "Butting in" part way through songs, and that's why we all like him here.
