What we also have to remember is that thankfully death and injuries were averted in these recent attacks Mike, but it it only takes that tiny minority to cause carnage, and we may be crying out for doctors in this country but it's also obvious that the more over populated we become so inevitabley does the need increase for more doctors but we can do without those that are going to blow us all up. At least something more has been learned from these latest attacks and this is why we need stringent checks and tighter controls of who's coming through that door.

As a regular visitor to Cyprus for many, many years, overstaying your
welcome you have to report to Immigration, wonder why the Uk does not
have the same policy of the stringent checks ?
Angela
I think the culprit's in the London and Glasgow attack's were given "permanent" visas to stay in the UK. I don't think they were visiting the UK on a temporary basis. How many other "permanent visitors" are there here in the UK, willing to cause carnage

checks not stringent enough
I will have to agree that checks at British Immigration are not stringent enough. Why do I say that? I know Malaysians who speak very little English but who have gone in and out of UK many times to work illegally. These are sales personnel in the local shopping centres here. Everytime a few of them disappear for a few months, it's to good ole UK to earn sterling since the pound is 7 times the value of the Malaysian ringgit. They have served me when I buy stuff so I know their standard of English is not good enough if interrogated by British Immigration. So the checks have been too lax.......

I just think what we should be worried about more than immigration is why these people feel the hatred they do for the UK. The recent attempted attacks are are from a group of doctors, one of whom was extremey well respected in his field. All of them would have been welcomed by the NHS, as they would by any countries health service. There are a whole host of countries who would have given these applicants the same welcome, including Australia and NZ, who also fast-track medical professions for immigration. One doctor was from Jordan, and another Saudi Arabia - both of them relatively friendly countries to the UK.
The 7/7 bombers, on the other hand, were all raised in Britain, and most of them were born here. They were 'turned' by religious fantatics, and that is what we should be worried about. That is why I said that intelligence is the biggest weapon in the current war of nerves - we have to know who these evil manipulators are, and get them out - either back home, or in prison.
As far as I immigration goes, I'm not saying the current system is working. I'm a big fan of ID cards myself -but thats another can of worms.

Terence's comments are quite scary that so few checks are made on people entering the U.K and then can easily work here illegally.
With regard to the terrorists, they appear to have such strong beliefs that they think it an honour to die for their cause.
Whoever would have considered Medical Professionals, who make a promise to protect and respect life, would seek to blindly destroy it in this way.
Do they even consider who their targets are? When they attack an airport, surely there is no regard for any race or religion, they attack every nationality under the sun!

One lame excuse for not bringing ID cards into force Mike is mainly the cost, they have the cheek to tell us.
Pity the amount of money that's awamped into handouts to all the illegal thousands here couldn't be put to better use like ferreting them out and deporting them for instance. There would be little need for ID cards then
As far as doctors employed by the NHS a newspaper columnist wondered why alarm bells weren't ringing when an Iraqi doctor applied for a job here. He would have enough to do in his own country folllowing what's happening there.
Then there was the terribly decent chap who put out the flames of the terrorist who jumped out of the car when he was just roasting nicely.

holy war
I just called up a Muslim friend of mine and he confirmed that dying for the cause of "jihad" or holy war is commendable. But he agrees that the ones carrying out the bombings are Muslim extremists who somehow have their sense of "jihad" all distorted. I am still baffled how seemingly intelligent professionals like doctors can be fooled into terrorism. Why do they hate the UK so much? Isn't it because of the war in Iraq?
