Strangely enough Gray, I was listening to the Carpenters last night, the album "Voice of the Heart", these were amongst Karen's last recordings.

Hi John

I remember you've mentioned the song 'Now' before, from that album.
I haven't heard these recordings, I think I'll be on the look out for the cd.

Hi Terence-the duet of "Over the rainbow" is fine--until Ray Charles joins in--basically, I wish it was a solo.

Gray, any recording of the Carpenters is worth looking out for.

"Voice of the Heart" was the first one released after she died, and is just magic. Let me know if you have any problems getting hold of any, and I am sure that I can help you out.

Marian

I agree that Ray Charles, whatever other musical talents he may have had, was not a singer. "Hit the Road, Jack" was the only recording of his I liked and only because it was uptempo.

I quite enjoyed the film of the Ray Charles story. Was it just entitled "Ray"? The guy who played him was very convincing.
Never really liked Ray Charles as as singer though either.
Love The Carpenters. :D :D

Glad to read these comments about Ray Charles. Sometimes I feel I'm the only person in the US who doesn't like him. I liked Hit The Road Jack years ago, but it's been way overplayed and used too much in TV and film.

Sorry again for disagreeing with everyone, but I love Ray Charles! :)

'What I'd Say', how about 'Crying Time'...?
You must love the theme to 'In The Heat Of The Night'!?

:( oh dear looks like I'm Billy No Mates in the lonely corner again :(

Marian - thanks for encouraging me to go out and buy 'Voice Of My Heart' - I shall take up the recomendations and let you know how I get on!

Thanks

Don't worry Gray, you're not alone in your liking of Ray Charles! 8) 8) I love many of his tracks, some of which were covered by the wonderful Bobby Darin, 'Sitting on top of the world', 'I wonder whose kissing her now', and 'I got a woman' to name a few.

He was also a great character in 'The Blues Brothers'!

Many many years ago, I heard Karen Carpenter sing Don't Cry For Me Argentina. It was a powerful performance complete with the roar of the crowd. I think the album was Passage. Since then, I have been unable to find the CD. Has this album ever been released on CD?

It certainly was Terence, as I have the cd here , right by my side!!
And yes, it does contain "On the Balcony of the Casa Rosada/Don't cry for me Argentina"--nearly 8 minutes long !!

As far as I am aware ,all the Lps that the Carpenters ever made have been issued on CD-I certainly do not know of one that has not.

Let me know if you cannot get hold of it.

The Carpenters' album, Passage, also contains that quirky hit of theirs, "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", and a friend of mine of more mature years was recently telling me that his young colleagues wouldn't believe him when he said that the song was recorded by the Carpenters, as they considered it to be quite a cool track. He had to bring the album in to prove it to them.

We had the 'Passage' album when I was a child, but Dad has taken all his LPs to the charity shop! That was a few years ago now after we bought him a CD player for Christmas!

I particularly remember their cover of 'Don't Cry for me Argentina', and the accompanying scene. Karen, of course sang it beautifully, but it was even better for the dramtic build up of the preceding scene. Of course I remember 'Calling Occupants' from that album too - very topical with 'Close encounters' being released at a similar time!

But the song I loved most off 'Passage' was 'Sweet,Sweet smile' - -a bouncy and optimistic love song that I remember Mum singing and dancing around the dining room too! (thats where we kept our monster size stereo system!). There was also the very quirky, and slightly belated, 'Woman are smarter'
