David Jacobs just told us that Johnny Mathis once said on Juke Box Jury that Anne Shelton could not sing and that Tommy Steele was absolute rubbish

I remember the occasion well, Robert!! JBJ was my favourite tv programme at that time.

It caused a lot of trouble over here----but being an American, he had never heard either of those singers before, and was just giving what he thought was his honest opinion--but it took a long time for him to live that down.

:?: Who is Ruby Murray, John?

:D Glad you're still enjoying Strauss, Robert.

8) I got The Rare Monro off the shelf and listened on Sunday. Still sounds wonderful: Let Me Choose Life, Yours Alone, The Touch of Your Love, How Could I Ever Leave You, Try To Remember, Alone Am I, and of course, The Lady Smiles. I will continue again tomorrow --- especially disc 2 as it's been months since I've heard Blue Moon. :(

Today, I felt I needed to listen to something American because I've been watching the political party conventions. So I listened to Al Green. Soul music doesn't get much better than that. :)

Ruby Murray was an Irish singer, Paul, best known for her hits "Softly, Softly" and "Heartbeat". She was most popular in the 50's and I think she held some sort of record for having the most singles in the charts at the same time, perhaps Lena and Harry may know a little more. She had a very pleasant voice, she died several years ago.

Also, Paul, the tracks you mentioned from "The Rare Monro" are amongst my favourites, plus the lovely "It's That Time Again".

Ruby Murray was very popular in her day--or should I say "Back in the day"!

She still holds the record for 5 recordings in the top twenty at the same time. She actually died in 1996.

But her name lioves on--I cannot remember any other star, whose name has come to mean something entirely different---for the benefit of Paul--if anyone asks if you want a "Ruby"---they mean "curry" [rhyming slang.

Hi Everyone,

I am listening to the new Eva Cassidy CD, "Somewhere" at the moment.
All I can say is that Eva certainly does have the Wow - factor and not the X - factor!
Every track is wonderful and Eva's self penned song, "Somewhere" is just lovely. :D :)
