Re: Any Shirley Bassey Fans out there?
DAME Shirley Bassey has signed a new major label record deal – at the age of 72, it was announced today.
And the new recordings will be masterminded by the man who has been behind the soundtracks for numerous James Bond movies, David Arnold.
It will be the first collection of new songs from Dame Shirley for more than a decade, and follows her performance at Glastonbury in 2007.
The Welsh star, who is Britain’s most successful female artist of all time, has signed to Geffen Records, part of the massive Universal group and is working with Arnold on a set of ’contemporary songs’ which will be released in the autumn.
Although many of her biggest hits were notched up in the 1960s and 1970s, she has still continued to crop up in the charts in recent years.
In 1997 she scored a notable hit with Propellerheads on History Repeating and in 2005 she featured on the top 10 hit Diamonds Are From Sierra Leone by Kanye West.
In 2007 she had a hit with Pink’s Get The Party Started, originally recorded for a TV ad campaign.
She was awarded the DBE in 1999.
Arnold said of the collaboration: “There is a whole generation out there which has never sat in front of an amazing singer like Dame Shirley Bassey and experienced the power, the performance and the commitment that she has.
“Hopefully this album will introduce that audience to her as well as bringing her many fans along with them.
“There are not that many truly great singers in the world and Dame Shirley Bassey is one of them. She is still here, still relevant and still quite brilliant.â€
Here's Shirley at Sir Elton John's White Tie & Tiara Ball last week. She's looking good for someone past 70!
