As John mentioned earlier, Thora was a great actress too. I've never forgotten her Allan Bennett play "A Cream Cracker Under the Settee." Magnificent acting, and so moving.

Watched "The Happy Family" last night with Stanley Holloway and Kathleen Harrison, another good film, about a family who own a shop and during the Festival of Britain the council want to pull the shop down to make way for a new road and the family do all they can to stop the demolition.

Lena, Sky Movies have been showing Jaws The Revenge with Michael Caine lately, and I noticed in the description they say Michael Caine stars in another fishy adventure in which he's only supposed to blow the bl**dy jaws off. :)

Oh, also, must just add I went to see Public Enemy last night at the cinema starring Johnny Depp as Dillinger.

It was ok-ish, I get annoyed with films now because I just think they are far too long.
This was 2hrs 20 minutes and it it should of been much tighter I feel.

I aslo thought Depp was mis-cast, he didn't seem tough enough to me, but they were a couple of good set pieces.

Also, why don't film makers today use tripods anymore?
All the camera work is so shaky in action films now, it's quite hard to see what is going on and it means I never forget I am watching a film, I never get engrossed in the film.

OK, thats it, moan over. :)

I tried to watch "Sweeney Todd" the other day with Johnny Depp in the lead role. Hated it  and packed it in half way, although I have seen the musical version on stage with Dave Willetts starring, and enjoyed it. :D
'Mrs Lovett' was taken ill during the performance too and had to have a break for half an hour, but like a real trouper she came back and finished the show.

Why did you hate the movie, Marian?
Does modern cinema offer you nothing of interest, John?

The scenes were literally very dark Gray, and I just found the way Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter played their roles irritating for some reason. Although I'm not averse to horror films I didn't really like the gory close-ups in this one, I preferred to have the distance of the stage footlights between me and the action.

Hi Gray. I do like the occasional modern film but I've never been one for going to the cinema all that much, apart from perhaps in my teens (which unfortunatlely is quite a while ago now  ), but as you well know I do love films from the fifties and sixties.

John,

Where does your love of British cinema in the 50's & 60's come from?
Did you used to watch a lot of these films when growing up?

Hi Gray. Yes, I used to watch of the old black and white films with my Mum from when I was a child really, there used to be films on at weekends in the afternoons and at school holidays, then when I was a bit older used to stay up and watch the old horror films like Dracula. :D
