I heard a recording of You'll Never Walk Alone
played on the Elaine Paige Radio 2 show yesterday.
The rendition was marred by a proliferation of grace notes
and the singer was guilty of committing the most
egregious technical vocal sin: taking a breath
in the middle of a word - and did it twice. I was astounded
when the presenter informed us that the singer
was Barbra Streisand. I couldn't believe that such
an accomplished vocalist could lay down such an error-strewn
track, never mind agreeing to let it be put in the public domain.
Matt's technical mastery is just one of the reasons
why we love his music - he never indulged in elaborate
grace notes (they stifle the emotion of a song I believe),
and he certainly would not take a breath in the middle of a word.

After we listen to Matts stupendous vocals on his recordings, I think it is hard to compare other less quality singers........... as nobody can touch Matt's vocal powers ......... ...........sorry to all BS fans, but I was thinking about ALL other singers

I think that Jack's singing voice in the 60's was an AMAZING instrument. It had tremendous power, and an effortless, "gliding" quality. His voice could climb up and down the scales rapidly, shift easily from baritone to tenor, and then wind down lines in a gorgeous vibrato. And he already had the great interpretive skills to match, since he'd been studying the phrasing of Sinatra since childhood. His rendition of the Christmas carol, Sleighride, is often cited as the best, because he breezed through its intended fast tempo without ever sacrificing clarity or the joy in the lyrics. But strangely, the beauty and power of Jack's original voice began to weaken by around the age of 30. He likely realized then that he'd have to either adopt a grittier style of music (to match his voice), such as Sinatra's mid-life "concept" phase, or find a simpler style of singing that could serve him for the long haul (Jack obviously chose the latter). I know that many here prefer Jack's voice of the 70's and later, but personally I've always found it lacking the warmth and soul of his original voice (just speaking of recordings here, not Jack's obviously powerful communicative skills in concert).

Matt should certainly be praised for a voice that sustained its power and beauty far longer than most other singers, and the majesty that his voice projects is one-of-kind.

Quite insignificant really Mark. Jack wasn't on air until the last ten minutes, none of his songs were played, and the interview didn't really tell us anything new.
He did mention his dog Maxwell, who has been a part of Jack's life for many years, and sadly had to be put to sleep very recently.

I did hear from a friend who was at Jack's opening night in Newcastle last night, and he had a great time.
Jack was singing well and he included many songs from his recently remastered CD, and also from the forthcoming Bergman album.
I'll add my own review after seeing him at Birmingham on Thursday night.
