Hi Jon--I think "Look for small Pleasures" is a lovely song---but as for JM singing "Didn't we"-it would not come in my top 100.

I guess it is just as well we are all different---it gives us something to talk about.

Hi all,
I think I can only break this down to 2 songs. 'On days like these' Ive always loved, the main reason is that it reminds me of a special time for me. The other would be 'Ive grown accustomed to her face', don't know if anyone else has mentioned this one, its just a beautiful version :D

Hi Thomas--thanks for your nominations---those 2 have not yet been nominated by anyone. I think Matt singing "I've grown accustomed to her face" is the best version of this song that I have heard-I just love it!!

How did I miss this thread!? If I'd got in early enough then I would have been able to make an original selection, as 'You've got possibilities' is the 1st Matt song I heard and gone out and looked for in a record shop. Of course, I had heard 'Born Free' as a child on a regular basis as I think there was a TV series of the film that used the theme as well. And being a Bond fan, I had always liked 'From Russia with Love'. But it s hard to pick one out!

I think that 'You've got possibilities' is such a light and breezy record, and loved it the 1st time I heard it so I will stick with that!

Hi Mike---that is ok--there is no problem in nominating a song that has been chosen before, if it is your fave Matt track!

By the way--have you heard Matt singing "Taking a chance on love" yet on the "Rare Monro"-another great version--he really swings it!!!

Hi Marian, I've got the 'Rare Munro' album now and I love the arrangement of 'Taking a chance on Love', very uptempo and sung perfectly of course by Matt. The only thing that its missing is the 2nd verse - the one about 'Brother rabbit, you can kiss your foot goodbye!' I think Eydie Gorme's cover has the edge in that respect!

Hi Mike and John -- You may be younger fans of Matt Monro, but you can pick great songs! You've Got Possibilities and If I Never Sing Another Song are both excellent. I hope you've heard the duet that Matt Monro Jnr does with his father on If I Never Sing Another Song. I find the structure of the song so interesting, because it takes awhile to get to this peak lyric: "I would get by, but I'm not sure how".

Hi Mike, John and Paul. Last Sunday was a special evening with singer Joe Longthorne at The London Palladium.
Joe sang some well known numbers and included his famous impressions, and payed a special tribute to Matt by singing. "If I Never Sing Another Song" :)

Hello Lena & Harry - ashamed to say that even though I work in London every day, I miss all these shows going around me! Joe Longthorne is so talented isn't he - but only ever seem him on TV, which he does very little of these days. He is most famous for his Shirley Bassey impersonation but glad to hear that he does Matt as well! Talking of impressionists though, did you see the documentary on BBC2 the other week, mainly featuring Mike Yarwood. Why is it that when Mike Yarwood impersonated someone singing, he could hold a note, but as soon as he said 'And this is me',and sang, he was awful!
Michael

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......

I also love Matt's version of "If I never Sing Another Song". But Marian, I can't believe you rate Johnny Mathis's version of "Didn't We" so low! Proves how different tastes can be, I guess.

No one invests as much emotion into Didn't We as Barbra Streisand from her Live At The Forum CD.

'Didnt We' is the Jimmy Webb song, isn't it? It's a hard song to get right, the best version Ive heard is Sinatra's. The worst is Stresiand's, even Jimmy Webb has said its far too overdone, with a stupid ending. Anyway, 'By the time I get to Phoenix' is a much better song!

Hi-Thomas and Jon--yes I have to agree --I much prefer "By the time I get to Phoenix" to "Didn't we"--I cannot recollect hearing Barbra Streisand sing "Didn't we ", even though I have lots of her recordings, so I cannot comment on that.

And I definately really like Johnny Mathis singing "By the Time I get to Phoenix" And I did not say that I did not like JM singing "Didn't we"--but just not in my top 100--do not forget he has sung many many songs.

"By The Time I Get To phoenix" was a big hit hit for Glen Campbell in 1967, but Engelbert Humperdinck also made a good recording of this number. :)
