Marian
And me too.....It conjures up the opening scene in the "Italian Job" with a sports car speeding along a twisty Italian mountain pass & the day in the 1970's when I first saw the film, at my school in the main assembly hall. The pupils were gathered together & treated to a film show :) Engineers were trying to fix the heating system & the Hall was the only room independently heated. After the film we were all sent home as the heating couldn't be repaired that day. My favourite Matt Monro song

Hi Folks,
although this thread seems to have gone a bit cold...(that's what I get for being a Johnny-come-lately I guess), I have to say I don't have one favourite Matt song...Has the man ever sung a BAD song...I think not.
Until my collection grows a little, I am thrashing my existing tracks daily, and after the initial emotional reaction subsides, I am now listening to the technical qualities of these unforgetable songs.
I came across a track called 'Ethel Baby'. My initial reaction was sceptical,it's not a name you hear a lot these days. I thought "What can a song with a name like this possibly sound like?
I listened, I loved it. Correct me if I'm wrong , but I think this track contains the highest note I think I've ever heard Matt sing. (..and there mine..).
I don't want to listen to anyone else .. just Matt.

It os always good to have some of these older threads brought back to life.

Quite a big difference of opinion on this forum re the song "Ethel Baby"--I am in the group that does niot like it one little bit--wheras our friend Paul, from USA thinks it is wonderful.

Mariana,
what do you think of 'Small Fry'? (from Matt at the BBC).

I'm another, like GregT, who doesn't yet own a large collection, but right now I'd easily choose I Have Dreamed. Sinatra's recording of this song is often cited as one of his all-time best, yet I feel deeper emotion through Matt's rendition.

Gloria -- I think we all agree that Matt Monro's I Have Dreamed is majestic. I love listening to it during a particular drive past beautiful homes and trees.

GregT -- Marian(a) is right that I love Ethel Baby. It never occurred that it might contain one of his highest notes ever; I adore that phrase. I think there are high notes in Havah Nagila and Spanish Eyes as well. A while ago we determined his longest held note is the final note in Time After Time. It would be fun to determine his highest sung note. Any other ideas? Perhaps Ethel Baby is the highest. :)

Ethel Baby is from the Broadway musical Mr Wonderful, which has a superb score with songs Without You I'm Nothing, Too Close For Comfort, Mr Wonderful. It was a showcase for Sammy Davis Jnr and is never performed anymore, because frankly there was only one Sammy Davis Jnr.

Hi Paul,Gloria,Marian et al Monrovians,
I must be doing something wrong here..it is taking me too long to notice everyone's replies...
getting a reply is a little like opening a Christmas present. Exciting.
I am awaiting another Amazon delivery in the next couple of weeks... and ,like a junkie...
the more I get...the more I want.
I really have to get an I-pod..I am becoming increasingly annoyed with the drivel that is benig pushed on commercial radio these days...the musical pap that plays between Matt Monro tracks is just too excruciating to bear.
Ahhh...The Nearness of You...Laura....Small Fry...Where or When...zzzzzzzzzzz(floats off...)

Greg, I can definately reccomend an Ipod-although I guess there are other MP3 players that are pretty good too.

However, I love my ipods--it is so easy to download from Itunes--and somewhere on this site I have put a posting on how to do this.

I have 3 at the moment, one upstairs, and one downstairs, both with ipod speakers, so that I do not have to wear headphones all the time. My latest one is the new ipod shuffle 4gb--smaller than my little finger-holds over 1000 tunes-chosen at random from my itunes--and has a little button that tells me who is singing what song. Invaluable when I am out walking the dogs !!!

I have so many favorites, it is hard to choose.. Matt has helped me through many days. it seems all of his songs are sung with such sincerity.. Well there just isn't any voice that will ever be close to his... On the Don Black disc... I love If There Ever Is A Next Time...For Mama... and I have always been partial to What To Do.... One thing I'd like to add .. I have just recently added to my collection Matt Live In Australia ... This man not only his voice " Have Nagila" Just Amazing!! But he had such a personality ... I listen to this CD .. every day and it truly makes my day . And as`I say so often... All of you Matt Monro lovers... I feel I am in the best company in all the world !!
