Jon - Thanks for the lieder and English song recommendations. I'll check them out. I'm interested in getting a recording of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf singing Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. I'll keep looking for it.

Gray - I don't think I could relax with Songs For Swingin' Lovers! It's a great album, and it would get me moving! I like to listen to Frank Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely at late night. I think it's his masterpiece.

Glad to see Johnny Mathis in the Spotlight this month. Those who aren't familiar with his music should check it out - it's well worth it. However much of his output has never made it onto CD but there is stll a lot available that is worth buying. And as to the rarities, Marian is helping me out on that!

Much as I would like to go to JM's concerts, work and family commitments don't allow for it. But Mariana44 is going to all three of them, so I expect she'll have plenty to report on when she returns.

We have just seen the report of the Johnny Mathis concert at Wembley last night. Some snatches of the report 8)
The T-shirts said The Voice Of Romance........ Johnny said very little on his first British date in a decade..... Mathis was not one to spend time introducing his songs, most of which were delivered without a pause...... to him it's all about the voice no less and certainly no more and what a voice he has although the first half of the performance suggested that age had withered it somewhat....... dressed in an ill fitting safari suit presumably made by his own tailor Mr Naff.
His Misty remain speerless, but.....
The interval meant a change of suit- a much more stylish black affair and the throat warmed- he found his range and the voice assumed control.
and control it was He had an encore of "When A Child Is Born"...... Talk, he didn't need to talk. Some things are simply beyond rational explanation. he toddled off stage waving a welsh flag :?

Yes we're baffled by him toddling off waving the Welsh flag, :? but there you go, Tom Jones used to toddle off waving knickers.

Lena/Harry

many thanks for the report on Johnny Mathis's concert at Wembley. As you probably know, I'm a big fan of his but couldn't make it to see him this time. I'm also Welsh, so I'm doubly intrigued by the idea of his having left the stage waving a Welsh flag. Mariana44 will no doubt fill us in on this when she returns next week. Where did you see this report?

Hi Jon, this report was in the Evening Standard also with a picture of Johnny.
The report did also say that he was performing in a draughty arena hopelessly unsuited to his warm, intimate gifts.
Well, whatever the conditions, by being here he is bringing lots of joy and happiness to his loyal fans after being away for Ten years. :)

Lena/Hary

thanks for title of the publication you saw the JM review in; must see if I can get a copy. Hmm, I think they are referring to the Wembley Arena. It's a bit like a warehouse, so I can see what they mean - cold and draughty.

Hi all---well you have not got rid of me that easily!! They just happen to have an internet connection at my hotel in Manchester.!!

Firstly forgive any mistakes [this is for Robert]--it is a tiny screen and I not got my reading glasses.

The concert at Wembley was as Harry and Lena describe I think, but at the moment on this small screen I can only read half the page!!

He was very hoarse on the first half, probably due to nerves---first time for 10 years in Uk--then first time ever a Wembley Arena--over 8000 in the audience I was told. He was more confident in the second half--he sang some great songs---and especially for Terence-the second song in was "I'm stone in love with you"--he has not included that for ages.

We all thoroughly enjoyed it--and such a beautiful evening seeing the fountains lit upand all the trees lit up at the back of the arena.

The concert at Birmingham however was just brilliant,
absolutely. He has been there so many times before and was much more relaxed.

I cannot tell you how good it has been to see all my lovely Mathis friends again---but I am also missing my good friends on the MM forum---even Robert    ..
Just joking Robert--I miss you too.

I am nearly out of money--yes I have had to pay to enter this message!!

I am just going to check message and go--catch up with you all later.

And in case you wonder why I am stuck in the hotel--it has been pouring in Manchester!

Marian

PS Harry and Lena please keep a copy of the review for me---thanks M
