Poor Marian, I feel rather sorry for you now Marian :( lets hope your regular friends will be back on the scene for next time, I hope so for your sake. Now we could have expected for your companions to go offf to bed at 9.0 if they were called Lena and Harry   as they are getting on a bit in years, and need their beauty sleep, by the look of their photo

The Songs Johnny Sang

Post by Terence Lee » Tue Sep 26, 2006 7:08 pm

Hi Marian

How nice to have you back. We all missed you!

Can we know what are the songs that Johnny Mathis sang at his concerts apart from I'm Stone In Love With You, his 2nd number?

Johnny Mathis yet another of my favorites - I just finished putting the album 'Portrait Of Johnny' his 3rd greatest hits album onto CD myself.
Amazing that he has been recording for 50 years! I have most of the albums but at Marian mentioned too few have had a CD re-issue.
Also most of those 50 years were with ONE record company (Columbia)
with only a very short break of a couple of years at the defunct Mercury label in the mid 60's.

Hi Dean--we are matching up all the way on our favourites at the moment. As you may have read I have just been to see 3 JM concerts-and he is looking and sounding as good as ever.

By the way-"Portrait of Johnny" is one of my favourite albums-I love the songs on it.

Hi to Terence and everyone else--Its really good to know that you missed me---especially as I still managed to make a few "guest" appearances   .

Firstly I want to say something about the Evening News Review, that Harry and Lena kindly posted --It mentioned "he was dressed in an ill-fitting Safari Suit, presumably made by his own tailor Mr Naff". Well for a start-this was not a fashion show--it was a concert. Plus the same suit was described in the Manchester review as being "Dressed in a snazzy white suit". This review also said that "these hits had the audience in the palm of his hand--particularly the glamorous 60-something women who tapped their handbags in delight". I can tell you right now that my handbag was firmly on the floor--as for being a Glamorous 60-something--I will just leave you guessing on that one.

Manchester was the most enthusiastic audience by a long way-over 10.000
at the MENA---but to me the sound at Birmingham was much better.
The NEC seemed almost cosy compared to the MENA. Apparently the Birmingham Review was excellent, but I have not seen that one yet.

Here is a list of the songs, as I have had a couple of requests. They may not be in exact order, but as near as I can remember them--

1 Life is a song worth singing
2 I'm stone in love with you
3 Mancini Medley--Two for the road/Charade/Moon River
4 It's all in the Game
5 It's not for me to say//Someone
6 Chances are
7 Let me be the one
8 Hold on--Let go--not sure of the title of this one--but a cracking song--my favourite of the whole show.
9 Misty
10 To the ends of the Earth

11 Song from Willie Wonka--not sure of title--but beautiful song
12 Kismet Medley--including Baubles Bangles and Beads, Stranger in Paradise plus a couple of others.
13 Secret Love
14 A Certain Smile
15 You make me feel brand new
16 Live for Life
17 99 miles from LA
18 Twelth of Never---these last 2 songs with only guitar backing
19 Brazilian Medley---Felicidad--I think it was called --sung in Brazilian
Manha de Carnaval--also sung in Brazilian---ending with Brazil.
20 When a child is born
21 Let the good times roll---this song was only sung on the last night in Manchester.

So as Jon asked--the songs were all the same except the extra one on the last night. Quite a few of his big hits, and some more unusual stuff.

I was hoping to get one or 2 pics on ,but the picture section seems to have vanished--but I am hoping to send a couple out by email soon.

I will do my best not to mention JM again, [as he has featured quite a lot on the last couple of days]--unless someone specifically asks me something.

Thanks for sending the list of songs performed. What about my favourite JM song: Wonderful Wonderful? Did he sing it? Perhaps it wasn't a huge hit in the UK, but I always have considered it (along with Chances Are) to be his signature pieces. I would have enjoyed the Mancini medley.

Hi Paul--no he did not sing "Wonderful wonderful" although it was very popular over here. But you have reminded me of one that I forgot, that again was very popular here, but in America I believe it was not.

I will just edit my last post --by the way-the song was "Someone".

The Mancini medley was great-it always is--I have never heard him sing it badly--sometimes changes one or 2 songs--often includes "The Greatest Gift" [from "The Pink Panther"]---great song.

Marian, I love the idea of Johnny Mathis doing the Brazilian medley. I think it is heavenly when he sings "A Day In The Life Of A Fool" coupled with a light Bossa Nova beat. Was that how he did it? He then build the medley to a glorious finish with Brazil?

I would have loved to hear him sing Maria in concert.
That incredible note that he held in the recording studio .... it will be so exciting to hear him duplicate it on the stage.

Good to see the list of concert songs from Marian. However while some of them are unusual, most seem to be the songs he has sung at previous concerts, and while I guess, like any artist, he has to sing his signature numbers, they are quite limited considering he has recorded literally hundreds of other songs in his career. I could list many among my favourites which he has probably never sung live, but then again we can't have everything in life.

Hi Robert---that was silly of me to put my name down twice-I guess I'm still a lttle tired

As for being a Glamourous 60 year old--I could be both----or neither---or just one!!

At the moment however I feel like a very plain 90 year old

I will liven up when my dogs come home this morning!!

I still can't believe he didn't sing Wonderful Wonderful. I think he would have to sing it at a US concert. This album held a record for the longest charting album until Tapestry by Carole King. I'd rather hear Wonderful Wonderful than Misty or It's Not For Me To Say---both overplayed on the radio.

Yes Paul, but JM also sang "When A Child Is Born" in concert this week, but he never would sing it in concert over there would he?? as it never charted in your neck of the woods. So it must be different songs for different countries
