Hi Marian
Thanks for that 'heads up' as I think they call it in the Forces! I was reading on bobbydarin.com the other day that the recent TV campaign for the new Vauxhall Astra that used Bobby singing 'Don't rain on my parade' has been very successful - so much so its now being used internationally
Disc 2 of this compliations looks very interesting, particualrly 'Softly, as I leave you'. I downloaded his version of 'More' the other day, he just makes singing sound so easy!

And heve you heard Alma Cogans version of 'More'? She really growls her way through the chorus - thats all i could hear on i-tunes! Sounds very good in a 1960s pop kind of way! Ashamed to say that I haven't got Matts version, and it isn't on i-tunes. Will look it up on the discography an buy it!

Hi Mike I think you will only find Matt singing that song on the M & S Cd "His finest". Also on the "Matt Jr sings Matt" as a duet. The M & S Cd is still available in M & S, but If you have any problems , just contact me.
I have not heard Alma Cogan sing it-I may give it a go next time I'm on I-tunes.

Hi Marian - I can't get Alma's version out of my head now after carrying Bobbys version around all week! I only discovered this song this week - don't ask me why its taken so long! I saw someone refer to it as one of the best melodies of the late 20th century, but it was actually the lyrics that I liked first.
Have you seen the film 'Beyond the sea' ? - I haven't yet, but expect it will be pretty cheap in the shops by now. I saw a note from Bobbys son on the website saying that the film had his blessing despite initial misgivings, and that Kevin Spacey was the ideal actor to portray his father. I must also make a note of the book details and put it on my Xmas list! Is there more than one Boby Darin bio, and which do you recommend?

Hi Mike--yes I have seen "Beyond the Sea"-great film. Kevin Spacey was on Tv a while back, promoting the film--He sang "That's all"--a beautiful song, but he sang it very slowly, as most singers do-including Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, Michael Buble, Rod Stewart--all great versions--but Bobby Darin sang it fast and furious, which I loved too.
There are several books on Bobby-I have 3 , but the only one I can remember at the moment is the latest one I bought, called "Star-Crossed Lovers"-the love story of Bobby and Sandra Dee, written by their son. This book is quite difficult to get hold of and can be very expensive--but I kept checking ebay, till I got one at a good price.
Amazon has some books on Bobby-some good prices too.

Hi Mike,
(... the other Marian this time.)
I had an excellent book on Bobby Darin's life and would thoroughly recommend "Borrowed Time" by Al Di Orio. It is out of print, but you should be able to get a good second hand copy from somewhere like Abebooks. Publisher is Running Press. There appears to be a new paperback edition out now with a different title, but the hardback copy is definately a great book.
I also have Bobby's son Dodd Darin's book "Dream Lovers" by Warner books. I haven't read that one yet, but it looks an excellent read too. Described as "The magnificent shattered lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee by their son Dodd Darin."

HI Mike and Marian--just been checking my Bobby Darin books--firstly, yes it is called "Dream Lovers"---I also have "Borrowed Time"--plus another one called "Thats all" by Jeff Bleier.
To me the best one for his career is "That's all", and the best about his personal life is "Dream Lovers".

There may be two Marians, but there is ONLY ONE ROBERT!!
Thanks for both of your suggestions the Marians!! Have only every read snippets of stories about his life, plus the chapter that Connie Francis dedicated to him in her biography 'Whose sorry now'. She notes that she and Bobby were planning to elope, and that her father intervened and chased him off. She heard little from him after that but she noted that she can recall the time and place she was at at the time that Bobby and Sandra Dee announced their engagement in exactly the same way as she would when JFK was assasinated. Of course, his life was incredibly complicated itself, with his upbringing and alll; plus his illness. So, I am keen to read the whole story now!
