Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Matt's " I Have Dreamed" Just superb. Definitely the best version of this song, and one of our favourites.

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played Matt singing the James Bond theme From Russia With Love tonight
.........but there was something wrong as the orchestration could hardly be heard in the background !
Also when Don played the Johnny Mathis song "Chances Are" it sounded as though the musicians were playing at ground level, but Johnny was singing at the bottom of a well
We also got a Radio Two advert during the show, the first time ever !
Also Don said last week that this weeks show was his last in the series, but it is scheduled for next week too !!
..............all rather odd !!!!

Sandra, did you listen to the programme and if so did you notice those strange missing orchestrations ?

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Hi Robert yes Johnny Mathis sounded pretty much as you say but think Matt was ok. Just listened again and then on utube.
Anyone else notice-- John ??

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I am ashamed to say I very rarely listen to the Radio now Sandra, I used to always listen to Radio 2 years ago as well.

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
On his final programme of the series Don finished with "matchless" Matt singing Come Back to Me
.......and once again the background orchestration was very quiet apart from the rhythm section .......something must be wrong with
the equipment Don is using ..........Don also said Matt loved working with Billy May while with Capitol records........but I think Matts best songs at that time was while working with Syd Feller on those lovely ballads

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I haven't noticed any thing Robert .... but great to hear Matt with Come Back To Me.
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don is back next Sunday.....18th

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I never listen to his program, but I like to come here to read his selections. Seems like many repeats. Why doesn't he play some of the less popular songs he wrote like Nothing to Lose, All of a Sudden, The Southern Star, Pretty Polly, and If There Ever is a Next Time? All five are gorgeous and among the very best Matt Monro vocals. Probably Radio 2 just wants very familiar standards.
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Paul, I think Don chooses the Matt songs he plays, but I don't think he actually knows how many songs Matt has released over the years which is annoying as he does repeat many of the songs he plays when he could play many different and less well known Matt recordings

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Someone in Don's position could do as we do and search. The BBC has a tendency to play the same records over and over again, I've noticed that with some shows it's as if they get to the end of the pile then turn it overe and start again yet their record library is supposed to be huge. The only dj who played a lot of rarities and obscure tracks was Brian Matthew who is sadly missed. The rest of them can't see past the artists greatest hits.ROBERT M. wrote:Paul, I think Don chooses the Matt songs he plays, but I don't think he actually knows how many songs Matt has released over the years which is annoying as he does repeat many of the songs he plays when he could play many different and less well known Matt recordings
Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don was Matts manager so he should know better ................I could name at least 20 outstanding Matt songs that Don has never touched

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
Don played another "matchless Matt" repeat tonight the up tempo Around the World

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
He also mentioned when playing' I've Heard That Song Before' by dick Haymes that he was one of Matt's favourite singers.
Has anyone ever written to the show and asked him why he repeats so many Matt songs?

Re: Don Black on Radio 2
I was just gong to suggest that. Robert why don't you email the show and give him a list of tracks you want played.Sandra wrote:He also mentioned when playing' I've Heard That Song Before' by dick Haymes that he was one of Matt's favourite singers.![]()
