Yes I have been catching up with DVDs a little bit lately, as I left them alone for a while, what with the World Cup et al....

The 2 disc "South Pacific" DVD takes quite a bit of watching, as there are TWO commentaries to go through, commentaries I find fascinating, especially with "South Pacific" being one of my very favourite films, well Mitzi Gaynor is in it

so what would you expect. There are also TWO versions (the cinema release and a "road show" extended version with deleted scenes) of the film to watch

Yes I love the old B&W musicals, as they have a certain charm and warmth about them, of a time long gone by

Also I cannot join in the "refrain" game really, apart from a couple of follow up posts, when you go slightly off topic

Well here comes another one Robert.
We do agree with you though about the old black and white movies. They do have a charm and innocence about them.
As for South Pacific, (giving my age away again !! )I saw the stage production in London in 1951 with Julie Wilson who had just taken over the part of Nellie Forbush from Mary Martin, and the wonderful singer Wilbur Evans who sang "This Nearly Was Mine." and never been sung better by anyone since.

Hi Lena and Harry, Mariana44 and all. As I stated previously Mariana44, I don't know many of the "refrains" that come before the songs, being quite new (a few years) to the standards.

Hi Robert--it is a real shame that you do not know these intros, because
some of them are just beautiful---in many cases I prefer them to the main tune. It is true though , that there are not many modern songs that have this feature---they seem to just go straight into the song.

Hi Mariana44. I have heard a few "intros" to songs, but not many radio stations play the "refrain" also not that many songs have refrains, do they??

Robert, as Marian has said, not many modern songs today have a verse, and we agree again with Marian that the verse is sometimes nicer to listen to than the refrain, but the list of songs with the verse included is endless. In fact we even have some albums and CDs where the majority of the tracks have the verse included. The verse was as important and essential as the refrain to composors and lyricists of these songs, many of the multi-talented that we have mentioned and discussed so many times on the forum.

Thanks for that Lena and Harry. I love some of the verses I hear before songs, it's just that I don't know many of them.

Earlier on in the show, David mentioned that Paul O'Grady listens to the show every week while doing his ironing.

David is playing the wonderful Tony Martin right now, from Zeigfeld Girls

Tony who I believe is about 94 years old now, is married to Cyd Charisse. David played Ella earlier on, now Sarah Vaughn

I just got around to listening to this David Jacobs programme. Great to hear Matt Monro's Autumn Leaves on the radio. Besides Matt Monro and Doris Day, I enjoy the instrumentals the most, especially A Woman In Love by Stanley Black, whom I've never heard of. I just read about him on wikipedia. I found many CDs at HMV's website. More music to purchase on my next trip to HMV!
