A Dozen for the Desert Island
Here is my list:
The Hungry Years - Johnny Mathis
Start Me Up - The Rolling Stones
Music - John Miles
Die Nacht (song) - Richard Strauss
Look For Small Pleasures - Matt Monro
Now That The Sun Hath Veiled His Light (Evening Hymn) (solo song)- Purcell
I Live To Fall Asleep - Manic Street Preachers
Bella Mia Fammia Adio, Resta o Cara (concert aria) - Mozart
September - Earth, Wind and Fire
1st movement (piano part) of the Choral Fantasia - Beethoven
Bigmouth Strikes Again - The Smiths
In Der Fruhe (song) - Hugo Wolf
My overall choice if no other could be taken: Johnny Mathis, The Hungry Years.
I've tried to make the list varied, mindful that I would need a range of moods on the island. I realise not all of them may be familiar to everyone but the classical choices largely reflect my love of songs/music about night and the twilight, especially the Strauss, Purcell and Wolf, but I could have named any number of alternative pieces for this.

Hi Gray
My first love is Arsenal (also Matt's, I believe) because
we used to live within walking distance of the old Highbury
Stadium. My second allegiance is to my local Barnet FC
but I despair of them permanently languishing in the depths
of League Two. Alas, the club are the poor relations of
north London football and badly need the input of
a rich benefactor.

My thanks to Jon and Robert M for their Desert Island
selections; it is very interesting to note fellow members
musical preferences. Jon, I had never heard of the Purcell
solo song and I look forward to familiarising myself with it.
Robert, I agree with you about Matt's version of Maria -
it is magical and memorable.

You wouldn't believe Gray's build-up on the approach to the Elland Road Stadium.Gray wrote:Paul chose to visit York Minster rather than see the Leeds game, but I did show him the stadium whilst we were in Leeds on Monday
I couldn't visit Leeds without going to Mecca

But actually seeing it was a definite highlight of my time in Yorkshire.

Nice to see Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss on your list, Jon. But ... of all the music you know Jon you choose September (clearly one of Earth Wind and Fire's most mediocre recordings). I can see you taking Reasons, Fantasy, Side By Side, or That's The Way of the World, but September?

I am happy to see three Elgar selections on your list Keith. I wonder if Elgar will make my list?

I know I started this thread based on Marian's idea, but I'm finding it next to impossible to do this. I had twelve all ready when I was walking the streets of Manchester. But then new ideas came in Paris and then more on the plane home. So I'm now up to 18 or so. I'll think more about it over the weekend and try to whittle it down. And now Jon has told us we must choose one that we can't live without.

Well here is my list at last--it has changed about a dozen times, and there are loads more that deserve to be on the list---but like every one else, I am sticking to 12.
In no particular order--
You had me from Hello Michael Ball
Beyond the Sea [live version] Bobby Darin
For all we know Ray Conniff
I'll know [live--ish] Barbra Streisand/Marlon Brando
Oh that feeling Johnny Mathis
The Rainbow Connection Karen Carpenter
I'll take Romance Matt Monro
Sunday in New York Bobby Darin
Tell me on a Sunday Denise Van Outen
That's the wayI've always heard it should be Jack Jones/Susan Geirge
Time after time Johnny Mathis
The way you look tonight Frank Sinatra
My one and only would be "Oh that Feeling" by Johnny Mathis, which most of you will not know--but every time I hear it, it takes me back to when I was a teenager-I had just started work, and was able to buy my own music--I was young and carefree, and had my whole life ahead of me-I just did not appreciate it then.
