Pop Gear

Post by jon » Mon May 28, 2012 10:25 am

I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this show. There are good quality colour excerpts from it on Youtube: a series of performances from 1965 by groups of the day such as The Animals, The Rockin' Berries and Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, with Jimmy Savile providing the links, and I have to say I don't know what the origin of these clips is. British TV, after all, was still in black and white at the time. I wonder if there is a DVD of it. And to cap it all, Matt Monro perfoms at the end, singing a song on the Pop Gear theme and praising the groups that have been in the limelight during the previous year.

Yes there is a DVD Jon. I got mine on ebay a long time again.
I've just looked on ebay and there are 8 available for £2.99 each free postage. Obviously they are copies but the quality should be like my copy, excellent. I bought from mine one of the names on the DVD, Tommy Quickly who appeared with the Remo Four.
Good you see back. :)

Tommy Quickly and The Remo Five used to do the tour circuit in the 60'. I think they were on the bill when I sas The Beatles, I've certainly seen them anyway.

Marian I just checked it out on Ebay, is any of it live? If so I would like it, it says Eric Burdon is lip-synching. It also says the dvd is in a cardboard
S L E A V E !!!! I don't think so LOL!!!!

Be aware that there are a lot of Bootlegs of this film around (Called Go Go Mania in the USA)

Canal/Optimum did issue the film officially for about 5 Minutes, but most are bootlegs, so the quality varies!

It's a long time since I've seen it Karl but I think it's mostly live. I think Matt sings Walk Away too, as well as performing at the end.

I think he sings three songs on this, I seem to recall the other is "For Mama".

Thank to everyone for their replies. I've had a look on ebay and the DVD is indeed on sale there for £2.99, under the 'Go Go Mania' title; however, Richard's suggestion that there are bootleg copies of this around has slightly put me off buying it from this source. I think I'll just stick to enjoying the clips on youtube and hopefully the DVD will be re-released commercially again at some point.
