The Italian Job - On days like these

Post by terlingo » Mon Feb 20, 2006 7:52 pm

Writing from Montgomery Alabama, I love Matt Monro's sound. I grew up with James Bond films and my favorite song was always "from Russia with Love". Monro had such a way of phrasing and saying certain words, that his voice/sound was so smooth.

I didn't realize they used this song in the Italian Job, so it seems as his songs and his life keep on living.

From across "The Big Pond" I thank this site and the songs of Matt Monro.

one question: are there certain CD sets that seem to have a better quality of his music than others? I would like to buy some CD sets, but don't want to buy the poorer soundtracks.

take care all...Curt

I would recommend the 4 CD set "The Singer's Singer". This has all of Matt's hits plus some of the other wonderful songs Matt recorded through the years.

"The Essential"

It's true that Matt Monro seems to exist almost entirely in a world of anthology (except for the EMI twofers that are hard to find in the states). The anthologies are very uneven.

I highly recommend "The Essential Matt Monro" on EMI and "Spotlight On Matt Monro" on Capitol.

"Essential" stays in the early 60s with outstanding arrangements. Every track is a winner.

"Spotlight" has a cross section of breath-taking ballads which are the hallmark of MM's art.

Cheers,

Peter
