Frances Langford - Youtube

Post by ROBERT M. » Sat Dec 09, 2006 5:22 pm

Just thought I would bring Frances Langfords name onto the heading of this topic. I have tried many times to find a FL video on Youtube, but have never found any :!: But to my amazement, I happened to check the Glen Miller page on Youtube, and guess what I found, yes............................Frances Langford singing "Chattanoogha Choo-Choo" from the 1954 Glen Miller story, starring James Stewart as Glen Miller. Frances looks and sounds truly amazing........................she was 41 when filming in the "Glen Miller Story" :D :D

Paul or anyone for that matter, have any of you heard the absolutely wonderful voice of Frances Langford. She was Americas answer to our Vera Lynn, but in my opinion much better. Her voice is astonishing. Her ballads are heartbreaking. There are a few CDs available to buy, but on the HMV website the CD "So Many Memories" is available for only £5.99. The CD contains some adorable songs, and the sound recording quality is EXCEPTIONAL for a recording from those days, hardly any "hiss" which you get on many other CDs, including other Frances Langford albums, but "So Many Memories" is FABULOUS 8) 8) 8) 8)

We stayed in Chatanooga a few years back. Outside the wonderful aquarium they have there, they have the words and music of the song "Chatanooga Choo Choo" embedded in the pavement.
Peter and I skipped along it singing the song!! You'd never believe it now!!

When I mentioned to Peter about Frances Langford, he said she used to entertain the troups in WW2 with Bob Hope. Is he right :? :?
Jack Jones went with him to Vietnam.

Yes Marian, in a previous post a few weeks ago I gave all that information about Frances Langford. In the top post above in this topic I have mentioned that she was Americas answer to our Vera Lynn........... ie..............entertaining the troops throughout Europe and the US ..............including trips to the UK with the Bob Hope troupe during WW2, also during the Vietnam and Korean wars. In the Youtube video Frances Langford is seen singing to the troops in the "Glen Miller Story" 8) 8)

If anyone wants to see Frances Langford singing her song in "The Glen Miller Story", the link is (the volume is loud, so you may have to turn the sound down a little)-

The two girls who run Allan Jones's website sent me this info which I thought might be of some interest to Robert, as Frances Langford is mentioned as one of the featured artists.
Not sure of the time you could listen here in the U.K but I'm sure someone can work it out.

Nostalgia Radio Show
Bobby Fields, an actor-comic-singer-broadcaster, is hosting a nostalgia radio show called, "The Stardust Dreams Program." It airs every Monday night at 8-9 PM ( New York time) over WNJC-1360 AM ( Washington Township , New Jersey ) and on the web at www.wnjc1360.com It is sponsored by the Actors Federal Credit Union. Mr. Fields will be on for at least two months and as long as the sponsorship comes in.
He will be sure to play Allan Jones songs (his mother's favorite singer), and will include other classic entertainers like Danny Kaye, Sophie Tucker, Glen Miller and Frances Langford.

The first time I tried it it worked Robert. Sorry about that. I'll get on to the girls and see if they can help. Maybe the station is only on air for a certain time each day.

I just tried again Robert, typing the address in, and it worked. I see there's a dot after the com on the link which shouldn't be there. Have now edited out so it should be okay now.

:) I must say that I really enjoyed Frances Langford's rendition of Blue Moon on last week's Desmond Carrington's programme. It was neat how he didn't introduce her. I knew that she was forthcoming in the programme as Robert told us. But I didn't know it was her until after the song concluded. Then I went back and replayed it.

I had never heard her sing before. She has a lovely rich alto. Hers is a timeless sound. Many of the today's young singers sing in a similar style and in the alto range.

Your post was a nice surprise Jeff :D glad you liked Frances' voice..............I love her, as you know :) Frances sounds just as good on other recording's :) there are about 5 CDs available, but the sound quality on most are quite poor, with lot's of hiss.................but the sound quality on her CD So Many Memories is excellent..............it only costs around £5 or £6 too.............highly recommended :) I'm surprised you hadn't heard her sing before though Jeff
