Tony Bennett to receive Silver Clef Award for “lifetime achievement” in music

Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett. A legend who drifted from the spotlight for a few years before being “rediscovered” by fresh young listeners.
Bennett’s 60 years of music have created memories for multiple generations. His repertoire includes the iconic “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “The Good Life,” If I Ruled the World” and “Rags to Riches.” His music — particular jazz — drew new audiences in the 1990s and that cross-generational enthusiasm put him back at the top of the charts. Earlier this Bennett released a new album, The Ultimate American Songbook. He is also the mentor and inspiration behind Canadian singer Michael Buble, who has cast his musical fortune on cover’s of many of Bennett’s earlier music.
Tony Bennett will be presented with a lifetime achievement accolade at this year’s Silver Clef awards, celebrating his 60 years as a recording artist. Sharon Osbourne is hosting the 2010 awards on July 2 at London’s Hilton Hotel. Earlier this Bennett released a new album, The Ultimate American Songbook.
Some 11 years ago, I was privileged to hear Bennett in concert at Tanglewood in Massachusetts. The two of us and 16,000 other folks scattered across the bandshell and lawns of this music mecca. It was the last concert I was able to bring my mother to; she was then suffering the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. We sat under the stars and listened to a mix of old standards and new jazz as the full moon rose over the bandshell.
I had danced to Bennett’s music since I was a teenager; the music and the style never gets old. My mother and I sat side by side, listening, tapping our feet, bobbing our heads and mentally singing the familiar lyrics that had echoed the times of our lives.
Bennett has performed with Buble, K.D. Lang and Diana Krull at multiple venues, including Tanglewood with the Boston Pops Orchestra.
The Silver Clef fund-raising organization was founded in 1976 by musicians and managers from the British music industry to support all the charity and awarding activities of the Nordoff-Robbins Centre for Music Therapy. Later, the annual Silver Clef Award luncheon turned out to be an important social and business venue, as members of the Royal family attended as guests of honor. The Silver Clef initiative eventually expanded to the USA, launching the “Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation Inc.” in New York in 1988. The fund raising initiatives of the foundation were established in 1989 when members of the music business community arranged the first “American Silver Clef Award Dinner and Auction”. The funds raised by this event were to benefit the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University.
