Decca album

Post by jon » Tue May 22, 2007 4:00 pm

Picked this up yesterday from HMV Oxford Street for £5. I've seen it signposted for sale via the website so I expect you all have it by now (I've been away). Shows Matt's trademark phrasing but in a lower register than perhaps we're used to and there is less confidence in going for the longer notes, but nonetheless enjoyable. He seems to be purposefully mimicking singers like Sinatra and Bing Crosby on some tracks, presumably because he hadn't yet developed his own style. I'm sure the album will be a grower, and it's good that none of the songs is already available. Another worthwhile collectors' item.

When Mat sang "That Old Feeling" on the David Jacobs collection on Sunday, I must admit I thought he was singing in a Frank Sinatra style. But as L&H say, it was from 1957, so that's understandable

I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

I have just ordered this CD of Decca recordings to pair with my Dame Shirley Bassey CD single. Should be interesting to hear Matt sing in a lower key.
