Be My Lady
Be My Lady
I was just listening to the double cd "Complete Hits" that my cousin sent me from the Philippines. There are a few tracks on there that I'm curious about. One is the Barry Mannilow song "One Voice". When was that recorded. Also there is a song called "Be My Lady" which was written by a Vernee Saturno a Filipino composer. I am familiar with the Martin Nievera (Philippine singer) version from 1982. I had heard that Matt covered the song but never heard his version until now. So my question is did Matt recorded this song specifically for the Philippine market and are there any other songs? I say he did quite a excellent job on it like it was written with him in mind to sing it. After hearing his version I think he has the definitive one!
Also when was "One Voice" recorded and where?
Re: Be My Lady
Hi Eman,
I deal with One Voice first. This is a live recording from a cassette belonging to the Monro Estate. However there are no details as to exactly where this was recorded and this was before I started to work for Michele so i'm not sure what happened to the tape - it may have been disguarded after transfer to digital or may be included one one of the few remaining cassettes I have yet to transfer.
The version you have is taken from it's original release on "The Ultimate Matt Monro" It became part of Matt's act in the early 1980's
However two other recordings One Voice appear on 'Live in Australia 1984' and as a download from one media (or on the double CD 'Born Free') dating from 30th April 1983, live at the Araneta Coliseum Manila.
Be My Lady. In 1983 Matt was contracted to record a single for Dyna records in the Philippines which was Be My Lady and it's proposed B side Memory. However this did not happen and the Martin Nievera version was promoted instead - much to Matt's annoyance. The recordings eventually surfaced on a compilation called The Very Best of Matt Monro Volume 3 only released in the Philippines.
To date these songs have only been re-issued on CD from disc dubs - I am currently on a worldwide hunt for the mastertapes which are believed to be somewhere in Asia!
All these details (and more) are in the complete session's listing of the book 'Special Reserve' included exclusively with the Special Edition of Michele's book "The Singer's Singer - The Life and Music of Matt Monro" see the link below.

Re: Be My Lady
Hey Richard,
Thanks for the info. Indeed the version of "One Voice" on the "Complete Hits" cd does sound kind of murky and unclear and it is reminiscent of the quality of the cassettes I used to buy in the Philippines.
I didn't know the "B" side of "Be My Lady" was "Memory" as that is the closing track of Disc 2. Interesting that Dyna records didn't promote Matt's version and that Martin Nievera's company Vicor had the hit. No wonder I never heard Matt's version! Very interesting, though my honest oppinion is that Matt if his verison was promoted would have had the bigger hit!
I have the regular edition of Michele's book that I ordered from Amazon but I'll seek to get the Special Edition version.
Keep me posted if you or Michele unearth any recordings that Matt did in the Philippines. It's strange you mentioned The Best of Matt Monro Vol 3. I've seen compilations like the Heartbreakers album and one on EMI/Dyna called "The Very Best of Matt Monro" but never the Vol 1-3 albums.
I also read in the book how Matt loves the Filipino people
. That's a change to hear about an artist who loves my ancestry. Also on how the musicians he played with in Hong Kong during his Army days were Filipinos!

Re: Be My Lady
Yes, I think it would have done well too, but it was never released as a single in the end.
It is assumed that Matt only recorded those two songs so I doubt there is anything else on the tapes (Should I manage to find them!) as it was a 1983 recording, there probably isn't even an alternate take! General practise by then was to get the best orchestral take and then record the vocals over the top. Not that Matt liked recording that way, but it was the way of the world in 1983.
The Very Best of vol 3 is very rare. I have only seen one copy (On cassette) and that belongs to a fellow board member. We don't even know where EMI got the disc dub from back in the 1990's!
If anybody out there happens to have a mint condition copy of that album on vinyl, please let me know!

Re: Be My Lady
Hey Richard,
Thanks for never tiring of my endless questions. Hopefully you do find a vinyl copy of that lp. It will be interesting to see. I hope the quality will be good as some of the pressings of lps I have from the Philippines weren't that hot and also same with the cassettes. The cassettes some of them sounded like they were recorded from a radio station with a lot of static.
I know some releases were only available on cassette and vinyl versions were never pressed. I experienced this with looking for a vinyl copy of 1982's More Greatest Hits of The Monkees. I got the tape and never found the lp.
. I did manage to find the lp in abundance when I moved back to the US in 1984. Same thing with Bucks Fizz, The Nolans and The Dooleys, cassettes only. How weird huh?

Re: Be My Lady
We know it was defintely issued on vinyl - EMI have photocopies of the back cover in their written archives.
Hopefully I can find the tapes and there will be no need for the Vinyl then at all!

Re: Be My Lady
A couple of weeks ago we were sorting out some of our collection with a view to putting any duplicate LPs, CDs etc on to eBay and coincidentally we were going to ask you when we got back from holiday about the LP The Very Best Of Matt Monro Vol.3 as we have never seen it advertised anywhere but of course you have now answered the question on this thread.
We have more than one copy of this LP which are still in the original cellophane and have never been played so we will keep one back just in case you do decide you need it.

Hey Maureen and Harry,
What a great find. Do you think you could post a pic of the cover of this lp. Living in the Philippines back in the mid 70's to early 80's, I never saw this lp or tape! I've seen others but not this one.

Hi Eman.
We would love to post a pic on here for you of the LP cover. Unfortunately we don't know how to do this so if you could talk us through the procedure then we would do this for you with pleasure.

Hey Maureen and Harry,
Apologise for not responding until now but things have been hectic. I wish I new how to attach a photo but I'm embarassed that I don't
. Maybe Richard could help? It would be cool to see that lp, as like many of us, I never seen it and it is a rareity!! Could you tell us what tracks are on it besides "Be My Lady". Did you get it in the Philippines since it's only a Philippine release?

Re: Be My Lady
If you are able to send a photograph to me, I would be happy to post it for you.
I do recollect that the cover is a fairly awful drawring of Matt! Am I right?

Re: Be My Lady
We are going to send you a picture of the front and back cover of the LP via your email address. Hopefully, it will be in your inbox very shortly.
You are quite right about the drawing on the cover - Matt was not happy with it either.

Re: Be My Lady
Hi Eman,
As you will see Richard has very kindly offered to post the cover of the LP for us.
In answer to your question - we obtained the LP from a very dear friend of ours who went on holiday to the Philippines and brought us back the LPs. Sadly he passed away some time ago and we feel sure that he would have loved to have been part of our forum and seen how Matt's legacy is going so strong.
