I do agree that these presenters have caused offence, and that they have behaved like a couple of schoolboy pranksters, which they are anyway. Both Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand have built their careers on being cheeky chappies and the public have, in general, lapped it up. As a result, the broadcasters have given them pretty much free rein.
I don't think that the BBC has introduced swearing into society - - it mirrors society's general greater use of Anglo Saxon profanities! These words are used by people up and down the land day in and day out, in work, in the street and in the home. I'm not saying I agree with it, but lets not blame the BBC for it. Lets blame parents for not stopping their kids from swearing, And as for swearing in Eastenders, that is not the case.
The BBC call log for the show in question shows 2 complaints immediately after the show was aired, which has only risen since media and internet attention started to create further complaints.

No Mike swearing wasn't introduced by the BBC to society, in fact it had a highly respected reputation that for many decades was kept intact, though now some could say the BBC invented it, and weather it's used up and down the land, in the work place or whatever, and although on this subject neither of us profess to be completely holier than thou, there are many adults, regardless of the watershed on tv and listening to it on the radio find it offensive.

Morning all - there was an interesting article on the Daily Telegraph website about the 'generational divide' that this debate is opening up! I would put a link in but it seems to have gone now!
Mariana - i know we've discussed Mr Ross in the past and I know we both have differing opinions about him
I personally think he is (this episode excluded) a talented presenter both on TV and radio. He's had some wonderful guests on his Radio 2 breakfast show including Julie Andrews and they seemed quite charmed by him. However, I do appreciate that his approach is not popular with all, and I know that my mother can't stand him and wouldn't dream of watching his shows. I must admit that it concerns me that his show is on BBC1 at a prime time, and I'm not sure that I'm comfortable that such an 'accessible' show should alienate a significant portion of the population.
Lena & Harry - I know what you mean about the BBC and how it should set higher standards. BUT the BBC is facing tougher and tougher competition from a multitude of channels and BBC1 in particular is always expected to perform well in the 'marketplace'.

Yes, and without feeling the slightest bit ashamed Keith, and then there's the MPs mis-using public money and supplementing their salaries by paying wages to members of their families instead of employing real staff, but what's so amazing is that in spite of names being made public there appears to be no feelings of guilt whatsoever. In fact it's water off a ducks back.

Regarding Ross & Brand, the bottom line for me is that they left pretty disgusting messages on the answer phone of a 78 year old man.
Not only that, but the BBC then chose to broadcast it.
I find it very sad that
a) we seem to of lost a code of conduct that was always drummed into me as a child - respect for elders.
& b) that the youth, who will go on to form tomorrow's society in terms of it's morals and ethics, apparently want and demand this 'entertainment'.
Therefore, I think I was born into the wrong decade, I feel so out of touch with my peers and younger aquaintences.

Echoes of an earlier conversation here I think Gray - was it the visit to a Comedy Club on your birthday that triggered it last time!
I remember saying at the time that I too despair of many aspects of modern life. Too many rights and not enough responsibilities is the problem in a nutshell.

Couldn't Andrew Sachs sue Radio 2 or RB and JR, as Andrew's name was made known to everyone who heard the show, with the presenters making derogatory remarks to Andrew and his family for the whole nation to hear (which was very wrong to me, "not" being a Libran)
If these "false remarks" appeared in a newspaper, then Andrew Sachs would definitely be able to sue, wouldn't he ??

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

I wasn't condoning what they did or said Robert. I just wanted to hear what had actually occurred before making a comment.
Unlike. it appears, a lot of people.
.. and were they 'false remarks'? Hurtful and thoughtless yes, to be left on an elderly man's answer phone, but I don't think they can be descibed as 'false.' I don't believe his granddaughter has denied the allegation.
