Rare Monro plus new DVD

Post by ROBERT M. » Thu Mar 23, 2006 6:47 pm

So how excited is everybody out there regarding the forthcoming eagerly anticipated release of the Rare Monro. A Double album with about 50 lesser known songs, which will knock everybody out, we would have been satisfied with a single album of rare material, but a Double album is beyond our expectations. Even though it is tremendous news I will find it hard to exceed the excitement and anticipation of when the first DVD An Evening With Matt Monro was released. I was like a young child waiting for Christmas Day to arrive, for a few weeks beforehand. When that Monday of release arrived I went to pick up the DVD but was told the release date had been put back a week, I was dumbstruck, I thought I couldnt wait another week as the suspence was too great., I dont think i've ever experienced anything like that before. But the wait was well worthwhile.

Can I just mention that for anybody who likes the old Black and White musical films that ELEANOR POWELL has her first ever UK DVD release on the 3 April. The film is the Broadway Melody of 1940, which includes the scintillating tap dance number with Fred Astaire to the tune of Begin The Beguine as seen in the compilation film Thats Entertainment.

My tears will fall now that your gone :(

Robert, we can also hardly wait and are so looking forward to the Rare Monro. This really sounds like the Ultimate.
While going through our combined film and song book there were songs that were around during Matts singing career years, sung by other artists that we thought would have suited Matt's style perfectly, so we may possibly be in for a double surprise.
Now the Eleanor Powell DVD is one that will definitely find it's way in to our collection because the "Begin The Beguine " dance sequence happens to be our favourite dance routines of them all. In spite of the famous and sensational duo Fred and Ginger, We rated Eleanor Powell better than Ginger Rogers.
Thanks for letting us know Robert :)

Lena and Harry did you know that in the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film "Follow the Fleet" the girl that plays Gingers sister, and sang two wonderful ballads including "Get Thee Behind me Satan" was Harriet Hilliard, who looked fabulous in the film. Well she is the mother of the 50's and 60's singer Ricky Nelson. When "Follow the Fleet" was released in 1936, the British censors (only the British) deleted the word Satan from the above song, as the word wasnt deemed appropriate at that time. So you can imagine the song sounded rather different afterwards.

Robert, Yes we did know that Ricky Nelsons Mother played that part in "Follow The Fleet."
This is co-incidental because Ricky Nelsons father Ozzie Nelson was a band leader from the Thirties and Forties and Harry has made a prog CD for gmmy that was aired last night. This prog contains a song sang by Ozzie Nelson accompanied by Rose Anne Stevens and said to have the longest ever song title, "Im Looking For A Guy Who Plays Alto And Baritone And Doubles On Clarinet And Wears A Size 37 Suit " although Russell Davies played this song a couple of weeks ago said there may possibly be another.
Another song includes "Everyone But Me" and sang by Harriet Hilliard. Ed Stewart played Ricky Nelson's Hello Mary Lou on his show on Sunday. The banned Satan that you mention Robert reminded us of Don Cornell's No! One hit here in the early Fifties "Hold My Hand."
The song contained the words So This Is The KINGDOM of Heaven. The Churches e.t.c. protested and so the word Kingdom was changed to WONDER. :)
It's all very different now !!!

Can I just say how wonderful it is to read all these stories, I reckon I'm in the company of human encyclopedias :)

Some of the postings on this forum reveal knowledge and passion that leaves me feeling quite humble.

Hello Lena and Harry, Gray and everyone.
I bought the above mentioned DVD when it was released. I have watched it twice in the past week, the word I would use to describe the film is QUAINT. There isnt too much of a story line to the film, but in those days there wasnt, was there. But I LOVE the film anyway.

Fred Astaire (Johnny Brett), George Murphy (King Shaw) and Eleanor Powell plays (Clare Bennett). The story is of a couple of dancers Astaire and Murphy trying to make it into the big time. One night the boss of a talent agency is watching their performance in a ballroom, and offers one of them the chance of appearing with Dancing Star -Clare Bennett. But the two dancers names get mixed up, and it is King Shaw that has the chance of stardom. But he throws his chance of stardom away through the dreaded booze, getting drunk every night. In the end of course the the true dancing talent of Johnny Brett wins the day.

The film is obviously well known for the absolutely BRILLIANT, FANTASTIC, SPELLBINDING, WONDEROUS (cant think of any more words at the moment), Tap Dance between Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell. It is out of this world, obviously the best tap dance routine in the history of Motion Pictures. And Eleanor Powell looks stunning both during the dance AND in the fabulous gown she wears prior to it. I LOVE the film, as it IS my cup of tea, and Eleanor Powell is my favourite all time FILM STAR, and Fred Astaire my all time favourite MALE STAR. Hope the review helps.

new movie track?

Post by Michele Monro » Sat Apr 22, 2006 8:14 pm

I was looking tjrough some old contracts of my dad and found one that refrerred to dad singing the title track on a fild called "Girls at Sea" The track is Merci Beaucoup.

Now the thing is, did dada sing in this film, or was the track cut out of the final version. I feel the latter must be the case as no-one has ever mentioned it. I have ordered a video copy from USA but I have already waited a month and there is no sign of the delivery.
Have any of you ever seen the movie?

Any information is gratfully requested.

Hi Michele, the composer for this film was Laurie Johnson and if you go to www.lauriejohnson.co.uk there is contact information and they should be able to tell you what happened to the track and if it was recorded by Matt. LOL Frederick.
The voice of Matt Monro is part of my life. I take his music with me wherever I go.

Thanks for finding that out for me, I had searched long and hard. I do not understand what happened to dad's version.
Maybe I'll cancel my order, which still has not arrived
